Micro-professional courses in geomorphology and river management

These units are designed for professionals looking for Continuing Professional Development (CPD), reskilling or upskilling. They can also be used for academic credit towards a Graduate Certificate or Diploma.

Macquarie University is offering two micrcredentials, taught as an intensive, block-mode units. Both units are co-taught with an advanced undergraduate class.

Study each course separately (8 days) or together as one block (12 days – *fieldtrip overlaps)

Micro-professional 1 (5cp) – Geomorphic analysis of rivers (8 days - 29th Nov 2021 online, then 31st Jan - 7th Feb 2022 at MQ*)

An introductory online tutorial and pre-course private study is followed by four days of on-campus sessions at Macquarie University (MQ), Sydney. Topics include interactions of river forms and processes, assessment of river behaviour and change, river evolution, and impacts of human disturbance on rivers. Students then apply their skills and knowledge to geomorphic analysis of rivers in a real-world setting during a 4-day off-campus fieldtrip, which is run in conjunction with Micro-professional 2, a follow-on unit that focusses on use of geomorphology in river management.

Micro-professional 2 (5cp) – Use of geomorphology in river management (8 days - 29th Nov 2021 online, then 4th - 11th Feb 2022 at MQ*)

An introductory online tutorial is followed by a 4-day off-campus fieldtrip to explore forms and processes of rivers, as well as pressing challenges for their conservation and management. This is followed by 4 days on-campus sessions at Macquarie University (MQ), Sydney focussed on principles and strategies for river conservation, management and rehabilitation within an Australian context. Although not required, this unit is best undertaken in conjunction with Micro-professional 1 that provides pre-requisite knowledge on the geomorphic analysis of rivers.

Cost: $2,200 per unit (inc. GST). A 10% early bird discount applies to registrations before 31st October 2021.

Closing date: enrolments close on 20th December 2021 unless filled prior (noting that online introduction is online on Nov 29th but will be recorded for late enrolees).
