Ecology Australia has been providing ecological consulting and applied ecological research services to the public and private sector throughout south-eastern Australia since 1978, and has built a reputation for delivering high quality work with a strong focus on scientific principles and objectivity. Bridging the gap between consultancy and applied research, our team consists of experienced and dedicated ecologists and GIS analysts who work closely with clients to achieve positive environmental outcomes with ethical and professional integrity.

Due to a combination of structural changes and extensive growth over the last five years, we are seeking a General Manager who will further drive and enhance the business operations, provide innovative and forward-thinking guidance to our leadership team, and work collaboratively with our ecologists, GIS analysts and support staff to ensure delivery of the highest quality services.

The General Manager will require a strong background in ecology and considerable management or leadership experience. You will contribute your knowledge and expertise to the ecological services we provide and will oversee and assist our team in undertaking a diverse and interesting range of projects and services, including but not limited to:

  • Applied ecological research.
  • Ecological monitoring projects.
  • Flora and fauna surveys.
  • Biodiversity strategies and conservation management plans.
  • Threatened species and pest animal management plans.
  • Environmental impact assessments.

Selection Criteria:

  • Tertiary qualifications in ecological sciences, combined with significant experience in ecological consulting and/or academia, including with the planning and implementation of surveys, monitoring, data analysis, preparation of technical reports, and project management.
  • A strong track record in management and/or extensive experience in leading and developing others.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills that can be applied to a range of contexts, including but not limited to: leading a diverse and passionate team; providing supportive coaching and mentoring to staff; liaising with clients and regulatory authorities; developing and maintaining professional networks; attending industry events to promote Ecology Australia's range of services.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills, including effective technical writing skills for a wide range of target audiences.
  • A strong ability to make sound operations and resourcing decisions.
  • An excellent ability to provide high level advice on ecological issues, conservation values, site management and legislative/policy implications.

Key responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate effective leadership across all facets of the business.
  • Work closely with the Director to develop, oversee and evaluate business operations and strategic directions.
  • Promote a positive culture and strong performance while encouraging professional development.
  • Oversee project budgets and workloads for multidisciplinary teams.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations and service delivery oversight of the business.
  • Manage staff levels appropriately in accordance with workloads and revenue, including recruitment of new staff.
  • Assist in initiating and overseeing business development investments.
  • Embrace and drive our 'Safety First' culture and implement effective OH&S solutions as required.
  • Provide mentoring and coaching to senior staff.
