AUSRIVAS Bioassessment Course - Training & Accreditation
AUSRIVAS (Australian River Assessment System) is a standardised sampling and prediction system used to assess the health of Australian rivers. AUSRIVAS was developed under the National River Health Program (NRHP) involving the major environmental agencies in each State and Territory as a response to growing concern in Australia for maintaining ecological values.
AUSRIVAS Online Course and Practical Workshop
The AUSRIVAS Bioassessment online training course and practical workshop are offered by the Centre for Applied Water Science at the University of Canberra. The course aims to teach the skills and knowledge needed to assess river health to an acceptable standard using AUSRIVAS methods. Those who complete its requirements successfully are eligible for accreditation from the relevant State or Territory agency.
This non-award course has no prerequisites other than registration and payment. While the theory of river health assessment can be fully learned through the online modules, participants must attend a 5-day practical workshop at the University of Canberra to acquire the necessary practical skills for accreditation.
Accreditation
The AUSRIVAS training modules needed to fulfill requirements for accreditation in each of the four AUSRIVAS accreditation components are:
Module 1: Study design and site selection
Module 2: The habitat
Module 5: Practical Workshop.
Module 2: The habitat
Module 3: Macroinvertebrate sampling and processing
Module 5: Practical Workshop.
Module 5: Practical Workshop + macroinvertebrate identification component.
Module 4: Data analysis, predictions and indices.
Fees
The online training modules cost $550 ($500 + 10% GST) per module for Modules 1-4 and must be completed within 12 months of enrolment. The practical workshop costs $2365 ($2150 + 10% GST) per participant and is run over 5 days from the University of Canberra campus and will involve field trips to river sites in the ACT region. The cost of travel to and from the University of Canberra and accommodation is at the expense of the participant. Transport from the University of Canberra to field sites is included in the fees.
Registering Interest and Enrolment
Enrolment for the online modules is available at any time during the year. Registration for the practical workshop will be available during the year but will have limited availability. A waitlist option is available if the workshop is full.
The dates for the practical workshop are TBA but we anticipate that we will offer the practical workshops in late May as well as mid-November.
For further information or to register your interest in enrolling in the course and receive an obligation free enrolment pack please contact the AUSRIVAS team at the University of Canberra at ausrivas@canberra.edu.au.
