About the role

The Land team is responsible for the coordination and delivery of land-based NRM activities and services to communities across the Torres Strait. 

This includes working closely with Registered Native Title Body Corporate (RNTBCs), TSRA Rangers and other LSMU staff, and local and regional government agencies in land-based NRM projects that are driven by Torres Strait Native Title Holders and communities.

The Land team are responsible for three key programs:

  • Sustainable Horticulture
  • Invasive Species Management
  • Biodiversity Management

What you'll be doing:

  • Maintain an in-depth understanding of and compliance with relevant NRM legislation and policy frameworks at state and commonwealth levels affecting the Torres Strait.
  • Undertake analysis of scientific literature to provide a degree of specialist advice, and contributes to the development of policies and procedures, for land-based NRM in the region.
  • Take initiative and responsibility for the completion of simultaneous NRM priorities, operating independently in difficult or complex situations.
  • Accountable for tasks and decisions relating to development of project and work plans, budgets, and contracts/procurements. Think and plan ahead and consider issues that may impact on work outcomes.
  • Develop objectives for medium-term term projects for delivering on-ground activities, including biodiversity surveys and invasive species management.
  • Develop positive relationships and maintain regular communication with team members, clients, and a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop plans to deliver on set projects, monitor tasks and project progress, prioritises to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Support professional and technical skills transfer and development needs to rangers and Traditional Owners through mentoring and coaching in the implementation of horticultural/NRM projects and activities.
  • Report, monitor and evaluate of projects and activities, including assisting TSRA Rangers in data management, and asset management and maintenance.
  • Deliver a range of public educational NRM/horticulture content as well as professional written documentation, including reporting, operational plans and stakeholder communications.
  • Collaborate and liaise with LSMU staff, RNTBCs, other government agencies, researchers and community organisations in activities and projects, sharing information across the range of TSRA Programmes, NRM knowledge, activities or services.
  • Maintains effective performance levels and continually reviews own performance.
  • Represent the TSRA LSMU in regional forums, workshops, and inter-agency meetings.
  • Assist in the development of funding proposals and strategic planning documents.
  • Lead the integration of traditional ecological knowledge into operational planning and reporting.

Further requirements:

  • Willing and able to undertake field-based expeditions that are physically demanding.
  • Willing to at times work outside the normal range of working hours.
  • Willing and able to undertake travel to remote islands of the Torres Strait by light plane, helicopter and/or boat as required
