About the role

Join the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) as a Senior Field Officer, where you'll play a key role in protecting some of the state's most treasured natural and cultural landscapes. This is a hands‑on leadership role suited to someone who thrives outdoors, enjoys practical problem solving, and is passionate about conservation, fire management and delivering high‑quality visitor experiences.

The role is based out of one of our new reserves Tasman-Corinya with a homestead provided, which is suitable for families.

The Reserve is 130km north of Hillston, 200km west of Cobar and 70km east of Ivanhoe. The work roster will include working 5 days out of 7 days per week. As a Senior Field Officer, you will lead and supervise field teams and contractors in the construction, maintenance and restoration of park assets - including roads, walking tracks, visitor facilities and heritage sites. You'll also coordinate and contribute to vital on‑ground conservation programs such as pest plant and animal control, habitat restoration and fire management activities.

You'll use your technical skills to operate a wide range of plant and equipment safely and efficiently, ensure work programs are delivered on time and within budget, and uphold the highest standards of safety and environmental compliance. The role also involves engaging with visitors, neighbours, volunteers and partner agencies, providing practical advice and supporting park operations across the region.

This physically active position is ideal for someone who enjoys leading a team, is committed to safe work practices, and is eager to grow their skills in firefighting, conservation land management and operational leadership. Successful applicants will bring experience in outdoor maintenance or construction, sound judgment, strong organisational skills, and the ability to work independently in remote environments. You'll also be relied upon to use the financial and asset management systems to report on asset management and conservation outcomes.

About You

We are looking for a motivated and capable Senior Field Officer who thrives in the outdoors and takes pride in leading high‑quality, practical conservation work. You will be someone who enjoys working hands‑on in diverse natural environments, confidently supervises others, and brings a strong commitment to safety, teamwork, and protecting our natural and cultural heritage.

You're a person who can plan and deliver field projects, solve problems on the go, and use your technical skills to operate machinery, equipment and vehicles safely and effectively. You are comfortable coordinating staff and contractors, supporting training and development, and ensuring work is completed to a high standard, on time and within budget.

We're seeking someone with experience in land management, maintenance or construction, who is also willing to contribute to fire management, pest and weed control, and other essential conservation programs. Strong communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently in remote settings will set you up for success in this role.

Essential requirements

• Ability to work with the Department's statutory obligations as they apply to conservation of natural, Aboriginal and cultural heritage and resources, and willingness to exercise delegated authority for law enforcement.
• Demonstrated experience in the maintenance/construction of general facilities and grounds. Ability to supervise and carry out all duties safely in accordance with WH&S requirements.
• Ability to implement planned field and operational activities (including pest animal and plant control); and demonstrated skills and experience in fire management.
• Demonstrated administrative and organisational skills and capacity for working with various software programs, including ability to use the Agency's financial and asset management systems.
• Relevant WorkCover Certification, ability and experience for the appropriate operation and maintenance of machinery, plant and equipment for maintenance and construction work.
• Current Australian Class C Drivers licence or equivalent, MR Drivers Licence and ability to drive 4wd vehicles, Senior First Aid Certificate, and demonstrated ability and experience in operating MR vehicles, and willingness to fly in light aircraft.
• Certification and demonstrated ability and experience in operating chainsaw to at least cross-cut level, and ability to operate and supervise in radio usage.

Applicants must meet the requirements of a specific medical assessment) which is inclusive of a clearance to undertake the fitness test for firefighting fitness roles (i.e. moderate level Task-Based Assessment for Firefighters) within the 12-month probationary period, if relevant.

The role holder must obtain certification at the appropriate level prior to undertaking firefighting/incident control duties.
