Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation (BAC) is a progressive Aboriginal corporation based in Maningrida that employs over 200 people. We represent and assist over 4000 Aboriginal people in the 32 homelands surrounding Maningrida in West Arnhem Land. Our work is carried out in the context of people’s traditional lands, cultural practices, and languages. Our services include new building and maintenance, road maintenance, arts, community development programs, collection of wild foods, and many more.

The primary aim of this role is to develop Bawinanga Sea Country operational workplans, coordinate and support the Bawinanga Sea Country Rangers with a wide range of patrolling, research and management activities. The position will supervise sea rangers to best carry out their work, build local capacity through development, managing work plans and targets in conjunction with other Coordinators and supporting training and personal development of rangers.

We are looking for someone who can:

  • Coordinate the Bawinanga Sea Country Ranger Team which consists of six Traditional Owner Rangers and four commercially surveyed vessels to undertake a wide range of patrolling, research and Cultural & Natural Resource management on the Djelk Sea IPA.
  • Develop, expand and implement the annual Sea Country Ranger operational workplans in line with the Djelk Sea Country Healthy Country Plan and Traditional Owner aspirations.
  • Develop strategic partnerships with Traditional Owners, research agencies, Government and Non-government organisations concerned with Djelk Sea Country IPA.
  • Assist the Ranger Manager and Ranger Coordinators, to ensure that Sea Country Rangers maintain vehicles, vessels and equipment to a high standard.
  • Work with the Sea Country Rangers to build their capacity with mapping technologies, data collection software and report writing.
  • Support the Sea Country Rangers to continue to strengthen their roles in the newly established Fisheries Compliance aspect of the Bawinanga Sea Rangers.
  • Maintain positive, cooperative and constructive working relationships with all Rangers and staff of Bawinanga.
  • Other duties as required by the Ranger Manager to support the coordination and delivery of on country ranger operations across the land and sea work programs including weed control, fire management, cultural and homelands services.
  • Support the coordination of an annual IPA Advisory Committee meeting by identifying and liaising with relevant sea country stakeholders
  • Actively participate in the Maningrida College Learning on Country (LoC) program supporting LoC students to work with Djelk rangers wherever possible.
  • Responsible for the workplace and safety aspects of the Sea Country program work.
  • Complete Reports for funding programs as required by the Manager.
  • Attend work related meetings and forums representing Djelk Rangers as required by the Manager.

Seeking candidates with:

  • Certification in commercial vessel operation, maintenance and safety procedures, a minimum Coxswain Grade 2 NC1 maritime certification, licence and sea time.
  • Prior experience working with Indigenous Rangers and Traditional Owners in Northern Australia to cooperatively develop and implement land and sea management work programs, with a strong focus on the sea country management sector.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting and mentoring the professional development of Indigenous Rangers.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage positively with Traditional Owners and stakeholders from a wide range of research, government and non-government organisations nurturing productive working partnerships and relationships.
  • Competent in the application of IT, mapping and data collection software within the cultural & natural resource management industry.
  • A current NT OCHRE Card or the ability to obtain one.
  • A current Drivers Licence and Current First Aid Certification
  • Current National Police Clearance.

Desirable:

  • 4WD Training
  • AHCMOM216 - Operate side by side utility vehicles or equivalent.
  • Demonstrable understanding of Traditional Owner governance protocols, and relevant NT and Commonwealth legislation.
  • Experience working in remote Aboriginal communities and in cross cultural contexts.
  • Strong knowledge of Indigenous Protected areas (IPAs)
  • Experience working for a community development or not-for-profit organisation.
  • Remote Area First Aid qualification.
