Science for Wildlife is a growing, high impact not-for-profit organisation focused on conserving our native wildlife and the places we all call home. We undertake applied scientific research across a range of disciplines to ensure evidence-based and effective conservation outcomes, while also engaging the community to build stewardship and local capacity for conservation.

As Community Engagement and Communications Officer, you will play a vital role in amplifying Science for Wildlife’s impact by supporting both internal and external communications and fostering meaningful engagement with our community, supporters, and key stakeholder organisations. You’ll work closely with the Executive Director, Communications Manager, science staff, and volunteers, on operational delivery of community engagement and communications activities.

Help turn science into action by connecting with communities.

Join a growing conservation team working to engage landholders, volunteers, and local communities in hands-on wildlife conservation. Work in the stunning Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area, helping to conserve iconic and endangered species and their habitats.

About the role

This is a broad and dynamic position suited to someone who enjoys science, communication and grassroots community work. You’ll contribute to a range of important programs from environmental research to community education and empowerment. You'll help manage content, events, volunteer coordination and stakeholder relationships, translating conservation science into scalable on-ground action.

This role involves working between our science and communications teams and is ideal for you if you have an interest in ensuring that evidence-based science is applied and has the broadest reach and highest impact possible. Examples of the diverse projects you will work on include facilitating engagement in our growing conservation research programs, the delivery of a new arts-based community education program, and growing a collaborative and nationally scalable information sharing system that includes emergency response for wildlife along with driving ongoing community conservation action.

Key responsibilities

  • Coordinate stakeholder co-design and participation in our programs
  • Assist with content creation for web, socials, newsletters, and print
  • Support coordination of community engagement activities and events
  • Help manage CRM, online fundraising tools and donor communication
  • Translate ecological findings into accessible messaging
  • Deliver community attitude assessment surveys and other metrics to strategically increase our impact
  • Respond to public/media enquiries and support media engagement
  • Work with the team to grow brand awareness and science impact

What we’re looking for

  • Degree in Environmental Science, Communications, or related field
  • At least 2 years of experience in comms or community engagement
  • Strong writing skills and confidence across social platforms
  • Organised, responsive and comfortable working with scientists, stakeholders, and volunteers
  • Interest in wildlife, conservation and connecting people with science
  • Experience producing content for digital platforms such as websites, e-newsletters and social media (using tools like Canva, Mailchimp or similar).
  • Comfortable communicating with rural and regional communities, with an appreciation for the practical context of landholder engagement and wildlife conservation and different values held by diverse stakeholders.

Why join us?

  • Flexible, hybrid role based in a World Heritage-listed region
  • Opportunity to work across content, community and conservation
  • Supportive small team with a strong sense of purpose
  • Build hands-on experience in environmental engagement

Location:

NSW-based in the Blue Mountains region. You’ll work remotely plus attend meetings in Katoomba, meet with local stakeholer organisations, and visit local field sites with our science team.
