About the role

This is a full-time Ranger Program Manager role with the Wirrawandi Aboriginal Corporation (WAC) in Karratha, Western Australia. Reporting to the Operations Manager, you will be responsible for providing strategic leadership, support, and operational oversight to our ranger team. This is a crucial role that contributes to the overall objectives of the organisation in preserving the rich cultural and ecological heritage of the region.

You'll work closely with Traditional Owners, Elders, and stakeholders to deliver meaningful environmental and cultural outcomes.

What you'll do

  • Responsible for managing the team including a ranger coordinator, rangers and other relevant staff, this includes oversight of operations, human resource matters, and other administration duties related to staff and program deliver.
  • Participation in key field work activities including attendance of local ranger events.
  • State and federal grant reporting and administration.
  • Lead the growth and expansion of the ranger program including strategic planning and direction setting and seeking additional funding and projects to support this.
  • Development of project and work plans with support from the ranger coordinator.
  • Build strong relationships with elders, members, community and key stakeholders.
  • Development and management of program budget including any grant related financial reporting.
  • Management of assets including vehicles and ranger base.
  • Provide training, guidance and mentorship to the ranger team to build their skills and capabilities.

Essential Criteria

  • Strong leadership and management skills including experience managing team members.
  • Demonstrated project management and financial management experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and maintaining partnerships.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to navigate a cross-cultural environment.
  • Understanding and knowledge of Indigenous social and cultural challenges.
  • Current Australian Open driver's license.
  • A passion for protecting the natural environment and a commitment to making a positive impact.
  • Competence in using Microsoft 365 applications.
  • Willingness to travel and comfortable with being in a remote setting including camping in a swag for up to few days at a time.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience with state and federally funded grants.
  • Strong knowledge of local flora, fauna and ecosystems.
  • Relevant qualifications or experience in environmental science, natural resource management, anthropology or a related discipline.
  • Experience operating a 4wd vehicle in remote areas.
  • Experience working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Island peoples.
  • Competence using GIS/Mapping software.
