The Opportunity

We are seeking a Senior Ecologist who will lead the ecology work stream with a focus on the Environmental Plantings program across our operating platforms, ensuring each project aligns with biodiversity restoration, carbon outcome targets, and agricultural productivity. The successful candidate will conduct feasibility assessments, or they will coordinate third party ecologist to conduct the necessary due diligence, engage and work closely with the General Managers to integrate planting activities.

Key Responsibilities

1. Leadership & Project Management

  • Leading ecological services for the environment services program.

  • Develop and run ecological assessment and monitoring frameworks; perform initial site assessments and coordinate third-party ecological audits.

  • Coordinate internal restoration teams and external contractors.

  • Partner with the Agricultural Operations Manager and General Managers to synchronise planting activities and other on farm operations.

2. Ecological Restoration & Implementation

  • Conduct field-based surveys, including vegetation identification and ecological mapping for project feasibility and property due diligence.

  • Develop and execute site specific native vegetation restoration plans:
    o Species composition planning.
    o Seed sourcing strategies.
    o Site preparation and planting methodologies.
    o Ongoing monitoring, maintenance, and adaptive management.
  • Support farm managers in adopting integrated biodiversity management best practices.

3. Process Improvement & Innovation

  • Monitor emerging industry trends, technologies, and best practices in restoration ecology.

  • Identify and implement opportunities to enhance efficiency and outcomes in environmental planting programs.

4. Reporting & Compliance

  • Prepare detailed reports, project documentation, and presentations on restoration progress and outcomes in line with Gunn Agri Partners project reporting frameworks.

  • Ensure compliance with biodiversity, carbon project standards, and framework requirements whilst mitigating risks associated with the project.

What You'll Bring

  • Relevant Academic Background
    A bachelor's degree in Ecology and/or Botany, providing a strong scientific foundation for understanding plant systems, habitat dynamics, and ecological restoration.

  • Ecological Expertise
    Deep knowledge of native vegetation, species habitat requirements, and proven methods for revegetation and restoration planning.

  • Project and Technical Capability
    Demonstrated success in managing complex, multi-site projects—including budgeting, scheduling, fieldwork, GIS mapping, and technical reporting.

  • Collaborative Leadership
    Experience leading multidisciplinary teams, working with contractors, and embedding biodiversity practices into commercial farming operations.

  • Regulatory and Strategic Acumen
    A thorough understanding of environmental regulations, carbon frameworks, and biodiversity standards, with the ability to translate ecological data into clear, actionable strategies.
