About the team

We are looking for an experienced Freshwater Environmental Scientist to help us deliver challenging, high profile projects with a focus on water quality, river health, aquatic ecology and environmental management. Our key clients are natural resource managers like Melbourne Water, Victorian Catchment Management Authorities and Water Authorities.  

The role sits within the Water Resources section, which covers the Australia and New Zealand region. For this role, we’re looking for someone based in Victoria. Our section contains a range of specialist skills in hydrology, flood modelling, aquatic ecology, water quality and hydrogeology. We value diversity, and have team members from a range of different cultural backgrounds. As a section we have a gender split of 40% male:40% female:20% flexible.  

As an experienced Freshwater Environmental Scientist, you will be responsible for leading the management and technical input into projects, building relationships with internal and external clients, and coaching a range of less experienced professionals. We will provide you with a clear path to career progression, through our Technologist Career Framework. 

The Role

The purpose of this role is to undertake freshwater science, water quality and natural resource management projects and to collaboratively work with other disciplines. You will be required to write proposals for, win and manage both complex and smaller projects within the area of your technical expertise. 

You will be responsible for: 

  • Leading a range of aquatic ecology and natural resource management projects, including both office-based and field-based activities
  • Data collation, analysis and reporting for projects such as environmental risk assessments, environmental management plans, scientific investigations and surveys
  • Providing specialist support to other technical disciplines within Jacobs, including for infrastructure projects
  • Building and managing relationships with clients, stakeholders and regulators.
  • Positively engaging with Jacobs teams across the region and globally, teaching and mentoring others to contribute to our positive team culture
  • Collaborating with diverse teams, with a focus on listening and learning from others in order to drive the best outcomes for our clients
  • Proactively managing and communicating risks on delivery of projects to the internal leadership team, and clients
  • Presenting information in a concise and effective manner to a range of audiences
  • Authoring, and providing reviews on assessments and reports
  • Managing projects so that they are delivered on time, within budget, and to the agreed quality

Technical and specialty skills

  • Degree in Science, Post Graduate qualifications in ecology, natural resource management, water quality.
  • Demonstrated skills in a consulting environment in one or more of:
    • Aquatic ecology
    • Water quality
    • Human health and environmental risk assessments
    • Environmental chemistry
    • Environmental flows
    • Water policy and regulation
    • Urban waterway health
    • Environmental impact assessments
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of standard software, techniques and equipment that are required for the undertaking, completion and delivery of project work
  • Knowledge of the legislation and policies that are relevant to our work
