Are you passionate about conserving freshwater habitats and protecting threatened species? As a Freshwater Ecologist, you'll play a vital role in restoring lakes, watercourses, wetlands, and swamps across the region. From leading conservation projects to providing expert ecological advice, your work will help safeguard the future of freshwater ecosystems and the species that rely on them. Working as part of the Landscape Operations Team and reporting to the Regional Ecologist, you'll collaborate with stakeholders, collect and analyse critical data, and drive strategic habitat restoration initiatives. As a Freshwater Ecologist you will:

  • Develop and deliver conservation projects that improve freshwater habitats and support threatened fish and frog species.
  • Conduct fieldwork, data collection, and ecological assessments to inform habitat restoration efforts.
  • Provide technical advice on the management of lakes, rivers, wetlands, and the species that inhabit them.
  • Design and implement new projects to expand conservation efforts across the region.
  • Collaborate with landowners, government agencies, researchers, and community groups to achieve ecological outcomes.
  • Prepare reports, strategic plans, and funding applications to support conservation programs.

About you

We're looking for a freshwater ecologist with a strong background in habitat restoration and conservation. The role is suited to someone who enjoys working in the field, analysing data, and collaborating with others to achieve meaningful environmental outcomes. You'll have the ability to translate scientific knowledge into practical conservation actions, making you a valuable asset to any team.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • A tertiary qualification in Ecology, Biodiversity, Conservation, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of freshwater ecology, including the habitats and species of the Hills and Fleurieu region.
  • Experience managing freshwater habitats and species, including habitat restoration and conservation practices.
  • Proven project management skills, including planning, budgeting, risk management, and contractor oversight.
  • Experience in field data collection, analysis, and reporting for freshwater ecosystems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ecological information to various audiences.
  • Experience designing projects and writing funding applications.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and GIS tools for data analysis and mapping.

The details

  • Term position to 30 June 2027 available immediately.
  • Full-time (37.5 hrs/per week).
  • Located in Mount Barker, South Australia.

Requirements:

  • National Police Check.
  • Current class 'C' driver's license and willingness to drive is essential.
  • Australian residency or a current work permit.

Remuneration: (PO2): $88,255 - $97,667 per annum.
