The organisation

Cat Laws and Wildlife Survival Working Group (CLAWS) is committed to preserving biodiversity and increasing public awareness regarding the detrimental impacts of roaming cats on local wildlife. CLAWS was established in 2019 with support from Oyster Harbour Catchment Group. CLAWS collaborates with stakeholders to address the complexities of managing roaming cats and encourage better cat control and containment. 

As a non-incorporated group, CLAWS funding and employees are auspiced by Oyster Harbour Catchment Group Inc. under a sponsorship agreement. OHCG is based in Mt Barker, WA, and co-ordinates and implements natural resource management in the Oyster Harbour catchment and surrounding areas.

The role

The role is to coordinate the delivery of the three-year CLAWS project ‘Reducing Roaming Felis catus’ (CSGL24012) funded by State NRM sponsored by OHCG. The position is funded as 0.6FTE (22.5 hours per week) with workdays by negotiation. The project will contribute to wildlife protection with increased awareness of the impacts of roaming cats on wildlife and includes feral cat control and developing a better understanding of the prevalence of toxoplasmosis in partnership with UWA.

Project activities include delivering community workshops and education sessions, coordinating subsidies for cat enclosures, supporting UWA PhD toxoplasmosis research and raising awareness of the project through media platforms. The successful applicant will be a CLAWS Project Officer, working under the guidance of CLAWS as the project steering group, and employed by OHCG.

Requirements for the role

  • Experience in project management with competing priorities in natural resource management or similar, with an interest in protecting native wildlife.
  • Strong community engagement experience with varied target audiences including school students.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, self-motivated and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to apply for and maintain a Working with Children check.
  • Current C-class WA Driver’s licence
