POSITION CONTEXT
Reporting to the General Manager (Strong Country), the Strong Country Coordinator (Rangers) is responsible for coordinating and managing the on-ground activities of the Nyamal Rangers, ensuring that these activities meet contractual obligations and are aligned with the Nyamal Healthy Country Plan and the strategic objectives of Nyamal Aboriginal Corporation. These activities include water monitoring, invasive species control, cultural site protection, plant, and animal monitoring, and threatened species management.
The role will involve trip planning, logistics and on-the-ground project coordination and mentoring of the Ranger team.
This role requires the Field Coordinator to work closely with Nyamal rangers, Elders, community members, and other stakeholders to integrate cultural knowledge into land management practices and ensure the preservation of Nyamal Country.

KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS
Field Coordination & Supervision
Lead the planning and execution of all on-ground activities, ensuring alignment with cultural and environmental standards while maintaining operational efficiency and safety.
- Facilitate on-country work including day, overnight and multi-day camping trips to priority areas.
- Coordinate and supervise on-ground activities, including but not limited to cultural heritage site management, invasive species control, and environmental monitoring.
- Develop, implement and monitor work plans, schedules, and budgets for field activities.
- Ensure all activities are carried out in line with Nyamal cultural protocols and environmental standards.
- Maintain a safe work environment, ensuring all team members adhere to safety protocols and use appropriate PPE.
- Ensure the proper maintenance and security of vehicles, equipment, and other assets.
Community Engagement
Strategically engage with Nyamal Elders and key stakeholders to incorporate cultural insights into program activities and strengthen collaborative partnerships.
- Work closely with Nyamal Elders and community members to integrate cultural knowledge into field activities.
- Foster strong relationships with stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and other Aboriginal corporations.
Training & Development
Drive the growth and capacity of the Nyamal Ranger team through targeted training, mentorship, and leadership development initiatives.
- Identify training needs for the Nyamal Ranger team and arrange appropriate training programs.
- Provide mentoring, guidance, and professional development opportunities for rangers.
Reporting & Documentation
Oversee the accurate documentation and reporting of all program activities, ensuring transparency and accountability to leadership and external partners.
- Maintain accurate records of field activities, including work plans, reports, and data collection.
- Prepare and submit regular reports to the General Manager -Strong Country and support the submission of reports to funding bodies.
Financial Management
Ensure responsible financial stewardship by managing budgets effectively and pursuing opportunities for additional funding to enhance program sustainability.
- Assist in managing the budget for field operations, ensuring activities are delivered within the allocated budget.
- Support the identification and application for additional funding sources to sustain and expand the Strong Country Program.
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
- Ability to navigate and adapt to a cross-cultural environment with calmness, demonstrating respect, understanding, and flexibility towards cultural and social differences, while fostering an atmosphere of mutual learning.
- Understanding and knowledge of Aboriginal social and cultural challenges and willingness to commit to community empowerment, training and development.
- Strong team management skills.
- Excellent communication, time management and organisational skills.
- Competence in using Microsoft Office applications.
- Current Australian Driver's License.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and project management skills.
- Willingness to travel and comfortable with camping on Country for up to and sometimes over a week at a time.
- An understanding of safe operating practices and ability to implement practical risk management strategies on the ground.
DESIRABLE CRITERIA
- In accordance with the objectives of the Corporation there is a preference for the position to be filled by a Nyamal person, though this is not a designated/identified Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander appointment.
- Recognised degree in Anthropology, Development Studies, Environmental Sciences, Natural Resource Management, or related disciplines or equivalent experience and knowledge.
- Experience operating 4WD vehicles in remote areas.
- Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, particularly in remote settings.
- Experience working with state conservation agencies or federally funded ranger programs.
- Demonstrated experience in land management or related field activities.
- Demonstrated experience undertaking remote work.
- Competence in using GIS/mapping software.
- Current First Aid certificate.
