Pila Nguru (Aboriginal Corporation) RNTBC (Pila Nguru) is one of the oldest Registered Native Title Body Corporates (RNTBC) in Western Australia and is the Prescribed Body Corporate for Spinifex and Untiri Pulka. Pila Nguru was incorporated in 2001 and is administered according to the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006 (CATSI Act). Pila Nguru holds the Native Title rights and interests in trust for the Spinifex and Untiri Pulka Determinations - a combined area of around 8 million hectares. The name Pila Nguru is an abbreviation of Anangu tjuta pila nguru ("people-land-spinifex-from", or people from the land of the spinifex).

Pila Nguru has five main areas of business:

  • Governance of the Pila Nguru Prescribed Body Corporate.
  • Land Management of the Anangu Tjutaku Indigenous Protected Area of the (IPA) and determination area. Pila Nguru employs the Spinifex Rangers and a Men’s and Women’s Ranger Coordinator to manage fire, weeds and ferals, protect and monitor the ecology and biodiversity of the IPA, and protect cultural values. Pila Nguru also manages permit applications for those entering Native Title areas and the community of Tjuntjuntjara.
  • Future Acts entails negotiating and managing exploration, mining and petroleum leases and other activities in the determination areas.
  • Heritage Management ensures the protection and preservation of Pila Nguru land and culture and coordinates Native Title Holders to participate in heritage surveys and monitoring activities.
  • The Maralinga Piling Trust is a charitable trust that supports the community in Tjuntjuntjara.

The Role

As the Project Officer, your role will involve providing administrative and logistical support to Pila Nguru’s projects, the Rangers and professional staff.

The initial term of the position is 12 months with a possible extension.

You will be based in Perth, with two to three weeks working in Tjuntjuntjara every two months. Whilst working in Perth you will be in a dynamic shared workspace alongside a partner organisation in the same industry.

This position reports to the (Perth based) Access and Agreements Coordinator and the (Tjuntjuntjara-based) Operations Coordinator and supports the team based in Tjuntjuntjara.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the Spinifex Permit System
  • Support on-ground heritage and land management logistics
  • Maintain and organise files, documents, and records.
  • Data entry and management
  • Provide administrative and operational support
  • Participate in operational planning
  • In Tjuntjuntjara provide logistical and project support to the Operations Coordinator, Ranger Coordinators and General Manager.

Selection Criteria

Essential

  • Previous and proven experience in an administration or project support role
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills with meticulous attention to detail
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including SharePoint, Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Flexible team player with the capacity to show initiative, prioritise, and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Willingness and ability to travel to Tjuntjuntjara
  • Understanding of the social, cultural, and economic context of remote Indigenous communities and a commitment to cultural awareness and safety.

Desirable

  • A tertiary degree in related fields such as business, sociology, anthropology, or environmental science
  • Experience working in an Aboriginal community.
