The Opportunity

We have an opportunity for a Senior Research Officer to be part of our South Australian Research and Development Institute Division within PIRSA.

The primary purpose of the role is to provide scientific support to the Fish Ecology (FE) Sub-program and broader Inland Waters and Catchment Ecology Program (IWCE) to deliver high-quality scientific data and information across government, industry and the community for the conservation, management and rehabilitation of inland waters and estuaries, and related fisheries. The role contributes directly to a range of fish monitoring and research programs projects in the South Australian River Murray. Work includes the generation of project ideas and proposals, liaison with funding bodies, budget management, carrying out field sampling/experimental programs, data analysis and interpretation, and project report preparation and delivery. A large focus will be statistical support for the FE Sub-program and broader IWCE Program.

The role contributes to delivering the agency's priorities including (1) Increasing productivity of our primary industries and agribusinesses (Stimulating Value Growth); (2) Securing production through biosecurity and efficient and sustainable use of resources (Sustaining the Resource); (3) Growing regions by supporting key regional development drivers and growing opportunities available to our regional communities; (4) Building partnerships with industry, stakeholders, research organisations and regional communities; and (5) preparedness to contribute to PIRSA's response and recovery obligations in emergency situations.

Special Conditions

  • Successful applicant will be required to satisfactorily complete a National Police Check (NPC) prior to being made an offer of employment.
  • Australian residency or current work permit is required (responsibility of applicant to provide evidence of a current work permit).
  • Two-year contract up to 24/02/2027.

Requirements

  • Regular intra-state and occasional inter-state travel.
  • Regular work outside normal working hours.
  • Fieldwork requires extended periods on small vessels.
  • Possession of a current driver's licence and willingness to drive.
  • Willingness to complete additional training as required.
  • You acknowledge your work, health and safety obligations and our expectations.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Possession of a current Class C licence and a willingness to drive.
  • A degree in science with a major in fisheries, zoology or related discipline (or equivalent research experience) is required.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • A PhD in fish ecology or fisheries science or equivalent research experience.
  • Coxswain certification or higher.
  • Apply first aid in remote setting qualification (RTO No: 88041 or similar).

Remuneration

PO2 - $88,255 min - $97,667 max per annum, plus superannuation.
