Narla is seeking expression of interests for a casual project-based ecologist role.

About The Role

Narla is currently undertaking Project Ecologist works for wide range of projects across NSW. The largest of these projects is the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme, a Commonwealth owned infrastructure project located in Kosciusko National Park. On this project you will gain experience working with a variety of alpine fauna and flora, some of which are listed as threatened under the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Act and the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.

You will be required to be on site for approx. 10-15 days (consecutive) at a time, and for 10-12-hour work days with limited supervision. Food and accommodation will be provided onsite.

We would also look to utilise you on our other projects all over NSW (a large amount of which occur in Sydney), which can include Project Ecologist works similar to the Snowy Hydro project as well as targeted surveys for threatened plants and animals, nestbox installation and monitoring, and some ecological approvals work (e.g. impact assessments). All required training for these works will be provided.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducting pre clearing surveys involving:
    • Identification of habitat features (tree hollows, soaks, woody debris, nests, burrows, decorticating bark etc.);
    • Identification of project specific weeds; and
    • Identification of threatened flora, fauna and sensitive areas.
  • Clearing supervision involving:
    • Fauna handling and relocation.
  • Rapid 24hr pre clearing inspections.
  • Validation of prior threatened species finds (from the Environmental Impact Statement);
  • Liaising with onsite environmental staff; and
  • Preparing pre-clearing and post-clearing reports.

About You

This role is heavily field based and is perfect for someone looking to enter the ecological consulting industry. To be suitably for this position you will ideally have the following skills:

  • Tertiary degree in Environmental Science (or a related discipline)
  • Experience with report writing;
  • Sound knowledge of NSW flora and fauna;
  • Experience handling animals;
  • Good communication skills;
  • C class drivers’ licence and experience driving off-road (4WD);
  • Have or be willing to get a construction ‘White Card’ prior to commencement;
  • Be able to pass a medical and drug & alcohol test prior to commencement;
  • Be able to pass random drug & alcohol tests whilst onsite;
  • Be willing and to work long days independently; and
  • GIS Experience (preferred not essential).
