About the role

The Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board's Wetlands Program team is involved in managing some 87 wetland complexes along the SA River Murray. The work of the Wetlands Team is applied environmental science and hands-on management at its most interesting and rewarding.

The role of the Team, and this position, covers four broad aspects of work; to -

  • Plan, negotiate and implement hydrological regimes to sustain and increase the resilience of wetland habitats and resources and the species that depend upon them - including a number of threatened species - and account for the environmental water use across these managed sites.
  • Plan and implement on ground works to sustain and improve hydro/ecological opportunities; eg. flow path improvement and water management infrastructure - but also threatened species management programs.
  • Implement an integrated monitoring and investigations program to support ongoing knowledge development and adaptive management; and.
  • Engage with stakeholders (inc Traditional Owners) and the wider community in wetland management activities.

About the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board

The Murraylands & Riverland region covers approximately 53,780 square kilometres from the Victorian and New South Wales borders to the western Mallee at the foot of the Eastern Mount Lofty Ranges.

The region forms the south-western portion of the Murray-Darling catchment into which the River Murray flows. The River Murray supplies the majority of the water needs for the city of Adelaide and surrounding towns. Much of the land is used for primary production, including pastoral lands, dryland cropping, grazing, horticulture, irrigation and dairy farming. There are also ecosystems that are of state, national and international significance, including the Ramsar-listed Chowilla Floodplain, the Coorong and Lower Lakes. The natural resources of the region also support tourism, recreation and manufacturing.

The Traditional Owner groups include Ngarrindjeri, the First Peoples of the River Murray and Mallee Region, Peramangk, Ngadjuri, and Wilyakali.

Key results / outcomes to be achieved

  • Contribute to the planning and implementation of hydrological regimes and environmental watering operations to River Murray wetlands and floodplains within a geographical area of the MRLB; in coordination with other water resource management agencies.
  • Contribute to the planning and implementation of operational validation and ecological response monitoring programs; and acquire, analyse and present date to underpin adaptive management and decision making processes to achieve sound ecological outcomes.
  • Contribute to timely and accurate scientific and technical advices/reports for a variety of stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships and collaborations with relevant stakeholders and partners in order to deliver the outcomes of the Program.
  • Contribute to ensure the resources of the Program (eg: equipment and financial) are appropriately utilised and administered.
  • Contribute to ensure that contractors and volunteers that support the Program are well managed or supervised.
  • Contribute to ensure that a safe workplace is maintained by accepting responsibility for own and others' safety, identifying and reporting hazards, and participating in workplace safety procedures and programs.

Special conditions

  • Position is based at Berri in the Riverland.
  • A current minimum class C driver's licence is required.
  • Appointment will be subject to a satisfactory criminal history check.
  • Some out of hours work and intrastate travel involving overnight absences from home may be required.
  • Required to participate in the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board's Performance Development and Review Program.
  • May have the opportunity to participate in fire management or associated duties.
