The Indigenous Desert Alliance (IDA) is an Indigenous-led, member-based organisation that plays a vital role in keeping the desert connected and strengthening desert ranger programs. The IDA works with its members and partners to ensure that Indigenous rangers are enabled to collaboratively manage the Australian desert are empowered to realise their aspirations for community, culture, and Country.

We work with over 65 ranger groups from across the desert in our role to 'Keep the Desert Connected' and empower a united voice for the desert.

The Indigenous Land Management (ILM) sector includes Traditional Owners, Indigenous Rangers, and their land management organisations who undertake a wide range of cultural, environmental, and natural resource management activities. In Australia's desert regions, which includes 22 Indigenous Protected Areas, these activities may include:

  • Cultural and ecological knowledge transfer initiatives.
  • Fire management.
  • Cultural site and heritage management.
  • Feral animal and weed control.
  • Threatened species monitoring and recovery projects.
  • Fee for service economic activities.

About the Role:

As the Field Officer of the Ranger Support Unit you will provide operational support and other backbone services directly to IDA member organisations in western SA who have advised their ranger programs would benefit from this centrally coordinated, additional level of assistance.

Your role will directly support ranger programs operating in the desert, on-ground, based on their specific individual needs.

This is a role that would be best filled by a practical and self-reliant 'generalist' who has worked successfully in the Indigenous Land Management sector. The IDA defines generalist as someone who has had experience of a range of different work environments including remote field work and project management, undertaking various tasks.

As the Field Officer of the Ranger Support Unit you will:

  • Work directly with Rangers and Ranger coordinators, assisting them in managing country in remote parts of western SA.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of projects, systems and procedures to enable efficient solutions for ranger organisations and ranger teams.
  • Contribute to other operational activities for IDA members and ranger teams as required in a support capacity.
  • Participate as a member of the IDA team.

To be successful in this rewarding, diverse, and challenging role, you will:

  • Demonstrably positive experiences working with Indigenous people and their organisations in remote desert communities or similar.
  • Experience working respectfully and in partnership with Indigenous people.
  • Experience working in remote locations, preferably desert-based experience.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated experience in cross-cultural communication.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
  • Microsoft Office skills, particularly with Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Willingness and ability to travel regularly.
  • Able to provide a current Police Clearance and valid Working with Children Check.

Desirable Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

  • Understanding of the operational requirements in facilitating and managing of Indigenous Ranger teams.
  • Working understanding of Native Title land tenure in relation to cultural land management.
