The Business

Warddeken Land Management Ltd is an Indigenous owned, not-for-profit company formed in 2007, combining traditional ecological knowledge with western science to manage and protect one of Australia’s most unique environments. The (Bim) Rock Art Project provides oversight and coordination to contribute effectively to the management of cultural heritage sites in the Warddeken Indigenous Protected Area.

The origin of the Warddeken Rock Art Project dates to 2017, a period when a small number of staff oversaw many accessible sites. Subsequently, Warddeken expanded its team, starting with a dedicated full-time non-Indigenous rock art officer/manager in 2018. In 2020, a second non-Indigenous full-time project officer joined, and starting in 2023, the project secured resources to engage two part-time Indigenous officers – one female (Daluk) and one male (Bininj).

The Opportunity

Rock art Project staff play a pivotal role in surveying and safeguarding rock art, ensuring the continued prioritisation of Bininj (Indigenous peoples of western Arnhem Land) values. Responsibilities span facilitating consultations, supporting rock art survey camps and day trips, assisting developing and implementing conservation plans, managing data archival, organising philanthropic trips and fundraising efforts, and reporting both internally and to the Board. Notably, they take on leadership role by actively supervising young rangers joining the project.

About You

• Enjoy a dynamic, ever changing work environment, particularly in managing and prioritising jobs including coordinating logistics
• Are comfortable working outdoors in a tropical environment including camping
• Have experience, understanding of and a willingness to live and work in a cross-cultural environment with Aboriginal people in a remote setting
• Can lead a small team of two part time Rock Art Project Officers and engage women rangers/officers and landowners in the rock art program
• Have extensive field science survey experience with data collection knowledge
• Have experience in GIS and or the ability to use a variety of GIS software, including QGIS, Avenza Maps
• Can engage stakeholders such as Contractors and Donors with funding applications, event coordination, reporting and public speaking, to share project insights
• Have a current C Class drivers license (manual) with 4WD experience
• Have the ability to obtain an Ochre Card
• Are able to commence early 2025
• May have Archaeology, Ecology or similar field science qualifications (desirable)
