The position is within the Fisheries Management Branch. In the Torres Strait the Branch is responsible for reviewing, developing, implementing and administering fisheries management arrangements for Torres Strait fisheries and outside of the Torres Strait a range of Commonwealth fisheries in cooperation with other sections of AFMA, management advisory committees and other Government agencies.

Reporting to the Senior Manager you will:

  • lead delivery of ecologically sustainable, cost-effective, and efficient fisheries management services to the government, the fishing industry, and other key stakeholders.
  • undertake consultation with stakeholders, with a particular emphasis on working with communities across the Torres Strait.
  • prepare policy advice and papers on issues including:
    • implementation of management measures (such as setting total allowable catches, area and seasonal closures, fishing gear restrictions).
    • development and administration of fisheries research arrangements.
    • AFMA and PZJA legislative objectives.
    • ecosystem based fisheries management.
  • undertake other duties as directed.

This is an identified position. The successful candidate must demonstrate:

  • an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and,.
  • an ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

The AFMA Enterprise Agreement 2024 - 2027 provides for some employment conditions specific to Thursday Island employees. AFMA positions are generally Canberra based with staff in other locations seconded to roles for a particular time period as determined by AFMA from time to time. Typically, Thursday Island staff commence with a two-year period on Thursday Island subject to extension at the discretion of AFMA.

Eligibility

  • AFMA staff are employed under the Australian Public Service Act 1999. All applicants must be Australian citizens.
  • The successful applicant must hold or have the ability to obtain and maintain a baseline security clearance. .
  • The occupant of the position must have an ability to undertake overseas and interstate travel including to remote and isolated locations across the Torres Strait.
  • Ability to successfully complete helicopter underwater escape training (HUET) within six months of commencement to undertake travel required in the role.
