The Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee (MRCCC) is a non-profit, very active integrated catchment management organisation overseen by a Committee made up of representatives from 30 industry, community and government sectors with interests in sustainable natural resource management. Incorporated in 1995, today the MRCCC reaches out to thousands of catchment landholders through our delegates and associated networks throughout the Mary Catchment; an area of ~10,000 km2 and over 3000 km’s of waterways.

The Mary is identified as a reef catchment, as waterways deliver sediment, nutrients and pesticides to the Great Sandy Strait, Hervey Bay and the southern Great Barrier Reef. The catchment is home to some of Australia’s most endangered aquatic species including the Mary River cod, Mary River turtle and White-throated snapping turtle, Australian lungfish and Giant barred frog.

The MRCCC is seeking applications for an experienced, full time Project Officer at our Resource Centre in Gympie. The successful applicant will be responsible for contributing to the development and delivery of programs which facilitate the adoption and implementation of best land management practices that improve aquatic and terrestrial biodiversity and water quality through riparian fencing, erosion control, revegetation, weed control and education programs.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

  • Position Title: Project Officer
  • Reports to: Operations Manager / MRCCC Executive
  • Status: Full-time (37.5 hours per week)
  • Salary: Starting from $85,000 commensurate with relevant education and experience plus superannuation guarantee and option to accumulate time off in lieu each month.

Specific Work Plan Deliverables

Responsibilities:

  • Project implementation, delivery and development including:
  • Writing project plans
  • Implementing and monitoring on ground projects with landholders and stakeholders
  • Managing project budgets
  • Record-keeping and reporting
  • Database management
  • Fielding and processing landholder enquiries
  • Delivering presentations to groups of landholders, stakeholders, school children and/or community delegates
  • Effective and strategic stakeholder engagement with landholders, farmers, traditional owners, contractors, funding bodies and delegates
  • Working independently and as part of a team
  • Delegating tasks across team

Selection Criteria:

The key selection criteria for this role are:

  1. Appropriate qualifications and experience in project management in an agricultural/environmental capacity;
  2. Experience using extension methodology in rural communities to facilitate the adoption and implementation of best land management practices;
  3. Experience with project planning, management, reporting and record keeping;
  4. The ability to work effectively in a team environment and/or autonomously;
  5. Proven high-level communication skills including the ability to connect with a range of people in diverse situations in all forms;
  6. Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively;
  7. Demonstrated capability with Microsoft Office programs including MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook 
  8. GIS mapping skills;
  9. Public speaking/ presenting;
  10. Ability to negotiate with and manage multiple subcontractors;
  11. Flexibility and capacity to conduct field extension work outside normal working hours (occasionally);
  12. Adaptive thinking and problem solving skills;
  13. A C class driver’s license.
  14. A working with children blue card, or ability to obtain one

Desirable skills:

  1. Experience working with rural land managers, particularly in the grazing/dairy industry;
  2. Plant identification skills; riparian species and pastures (native and introduced);
  3. Declared/environmental weed identification;
  4. Statistics and data analysis;
  5. Knowledge of water quality;
  6. Preparation of grant applications and acquittals;
  7. Drone experience including video development;
  8. Experience working in construction industries including implementation of Environmental management construction plans;
  9. Experience working with a not-for-profit community organisation.
