Practical Ecology Pty Ltd has been in operation since 1993 and is one of Victoria’s leading ecological consultancies. We have a team of experienced consultants that focus on ecology and bushfire risk management, and undertake a diverse range of projects for private landowners and public land managers across Victoria.

Our ecological consulting services focus on undertaking flora and fauna surveys, within a view to determining legislative implications associated with likely impacts and/or the provision of land management advice to protect and manage the values present at a given site. We also provide a skilled team of bushland restoration practitioners that undertake weed control, planned burning, revegetation and general vegetation management.

We are currently seeking an experienced GIS Officer. As part of this role, you will work closely with our team of ecological consultants to provide a range of GIS related services. This includes database management, map generation, data exporting and importing, creating queries, and mobile mapping device and data collection set up. You are expected to have a high level of attention to detail and the ability to meet deadlines. Interpersonal skills which enable you to participate fully in our team environment and also occasionally contact clients and referral authorities are also required.

The following Selection Criteria apply to this position:

  • A Degree or Diploma relating to, or incorporating, GIS
  • Demonstrated experience in providing GIS services to internal staff and external clients in a consulting setting, or public sector, preferably in an organisation / department with an ecological focus
  • High level of experience with GIS products, namely ESRI ArcGIS (including ArcGIS Online and Arc Collector) and/or QGIS
  • High level of attention to detail, with a focus on maintaining GIS database management with a high level of accuracy and preparing maps with a low error rate
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple GIS related projects with associated budgets and deadlines, while maintaining flexibility as priorities change over time to meet the demands of projects
  • Advanced computer skills, including competency with computer programs and software such as MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or similar software packages
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, along with high level interpersonal skills to liaise and negotiate with internal staff and external clients
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, but also as part of a team, showing teamwork and leadership ability
  • Willingness and ability to acquire new skills and demonstrated initiative and enthusiasm for improving GIS workflows and technology
  • Australian citizenship/residency, or a valid work permit
  • Given the nature of Practical Ecology, demonstrated experience in GIS services as they relate to the ecological consultancy sector (preferably in Victoria) will be highly advantageous, along with a demonstrated interest and/or skills in ecological assessment. This includes:
  • a strong working knowledge of relevant Federal and State Government Legislation and planning policies and their relationship to GIS products and services
  • demonstrated experience producing data for EnSym submissions to DELWP
  • a keen interest in indigenous flora and fauna and associated management.

Remuneration is to be negotiated dependent upon experience, knowledge and skills.

The position being offered is part-time (3-4 days per week) with terms subject to negotiation under the Professionals Employees Award.
