The Queensland Government led Soil Science Graduate program is looking for passionate graduates to dig into the world of soil conservation and sustainable land management.

You could be one of three graduates employed over a 12-month period in 2025 as part of a joint opportunity between Queensland natural resources management organisations and the Queensland Government.

Your involvement will help Queensland deliver on Priority Action 3 and 4 of the National Soil Action Plan which seeks to identify and develop the soil workforce and capabilities needed to meet current and future challenges for Australia and the region.

Successful applicants will be hosted by one of the 12 regional natural resources management (NRM) organisations across the state and spend half their time with the NRM organisation and half of their time with a Queensland Government department. The hosting organisations will be confirmed based on the available organisation/department within your chosen location.

Your role

The Graduate Scientist is a role in which you will:

  • Develop a sound understanding of soil and landscape processes including landscape risks, soil survey techniques and specialist systems and databases used for collection and delivery of soil and land information.
  • Develop information products and innovative data integration techniques including digital soils mapping analyses.
  • Describe, classify, and interpret soil, landform, geology and geomorphology features, particularly in relation to landscape processes.
  • Utilise databases, spreadsheets, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to capture, analyse and manage land resource data.
  • Interact with other projects, staff and external clients ensuring a coordinated approach to natural resource assessment and research.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical reports, papers, maps and information products to relevant clients and stakeholders.
  • Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and actively engage through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations people.
