The LSMU operates as the peak regional natural resource management (NRM) body for region and delivers investments from the Australian Government.

The key activity of the LSMU program is to protect the ecological complexity and biodiversity of the Torres Strait region, and the strong and enduring connection of Torres Strait Islander people to their islands and sea.

The LSMU structure, projects, and initiatives it delivers are aligned with the three theme areas of the Land and Sea Management Strategy 2016-2036 for Torres Strait: Land, Sea, People.

These strategies, their theme areas, and community-based plans underpin the work of the Environmental Management Program. The LSMU Land Team (the Land Team) delivers work across three key programs: Biodiversity Management, Invasive Species, and Sustainable Horticulture.
