The Midwest Region extends along the coast from Lancelin in the south to north of Carnarvon then inland past Meekatharra. The regional headquarters is in Geraldton. District offices are located at Geraldton, Jurien Bay and Denham, with District work centres at Carnarvon, Monkey Mia, Kalbarri, Cervantes and Lancelin.

The lands and waters we manage are varied and beautiful, from coastal cliffs, dunes and heath to rich marine communities to outback ranges and vast scrublands.

Under the general direction of the District Coordinator Conservation, the Operations Officer - Conservation:

  • Assists the District Coordinator Conservation to implement effective and efficient scheduling and delivery, of the Shark Bay conservation works programs.
  • Organises and undertakes the implementation of allocated field operational works associated with conservation activities, projects, and biological surveys within the Gascoyne district.
  • Ensures all programs, projects and activities are developed and integrated with district Parks and Visitor Services and Joint Management programs.
  • Provides direction, mentoring and training to staff, indigenous trainees and volunteers involved in conservation monitoring programs and activities implemented within the Gascoyne district.
  • Liaises with community, key stakeholders and community groups in a positive and informed manner.

Selection Criteria

To be successful for this position, you need to demonstrate your suitability against the following essential selection criteria:

  1. Demonstrated experience in working in nature conservation, or closely related technical area, with preference for experience and knowledge in planning and implementing works programs, invasive species management, landscape restoration programs and issues relevant to nature conservation and threatening processes impacting on ecological communities.
  2. Demonstrated experience, knowledge and skills in leading and managing teams including implementing operational programs and scheduling works, monitoring and reporting on operations and experience in budget expenditure and monitoring of allocated work projects.
  3. Experience and ability to train in skills associated with conservation programs, infrastructure management and supervise groups in field situations.
  4. Evidence of well-developed interpersonal and oral communication skills with experience in liaising effectively with external organisations; government agencies, community, and special interest groups with a preference for someone experienced and willing to work with Aboriginal people and having an awareness of their culture
