The Organisation – Environs Kimberley

Since our foundation in Broome in 1996, Environs Kimberley (EK) has led the effort to protect the region and is now the peak environmental NGO in the Kimberley. Environs Kimberley is dedicated to looking after the health of the land and waters of the region through advocacy, and on-ground cultural and natural resource management projects via our Kimberley Nature Projects (KNP) team.

Our vision is that the natural environment of the Kimberley is protected and well managed. Environmental and social sustainability are guiding principles for development.

Our goals are that Kimberley lands & waters are protected & sustainably managed; that we are providing for alternative economic development through a conservation economy; we have strong collaborations at regional, national, and international levels; and that we maintain a sustainable organisation.

Projects

The position will lead on or assist with the delivery of key projects:

• ‘The Nyangumarta Threatened Species Project’ where EK is consulting for and supporting the Nyangumarta Rangers to survey for and protect threatened species northern quolls, northern brush-tail possums, greater bilbies and black-flanked rock wallabies. Project activities will include Feral cat and fox management using different methods; Fire management around key sites; Management planning, monitoring and evaluation of feral animal management techniques; and Capacity building and knowledge sharing.
• The ‘Ngurrara Country: Post-Cyclone Reconnection and Restoration Project’ where EK is consulting for and supporting the Ngurrara Rangers to assess and restore parts of their country affected by flooding. Activities will revolve around Reconnecting to Country through on-country trips with community; Monitoring and evaluating flood impacts through wetland monitoring and ecological surveys; and Managing threats and restoring important cultural sites through weed, fire and feral animal management.
• Other Environs Kimberley projects where required.

The Position

The position will:

• Deliver activities required to progress and complete the identified projects, with support from manager, including:
  • Assisting with or leading on project management including budget management, milestone delivery and project reporting
  • Delivering on-ground activities either independently or as part of a team, including organising logistics with partners, carrying out activities on field trips, data collection, post-trip wrap up and reporting
  • Leading on or supporting in-office project activities including spatial analysis, data management and analysis, camera trap analysis and habitat modelling.
  • Maintaining respectful working relationship with Aboriginal Rangers and their communities through all project activities, including field work and workshops
• Contribute written and oral communication for Environs Kimberley including newsletter articles, social media, community reports, media engagements and funding applications.
• Be familiar with EK policies and procedures, and work safely and cohesively with the EK team.
• Occasionally manage interns, trainees or volunteers where relevant to the project.
• Support other KNP projects with other tasks where requested.
• Take up additional training opportunities which contribute new knowledge and skills towards projects and share these with the team.
• Contribute to the maintenance of the EK reputation which is built upon honesty, integrity, sound community engagement and the maintenance of strong collaborative long-term partnerships with Aboriginal people.
• Require someone who is:

  • Reliable: is consistently on time, organised and dependable regarding work commitments including, meetings, actions, tasks, field equipment and logistics.

Key Selection Criteria

1. Environmental scientific training (i.e. TAFE diploma, degree or equivalent training), knowledge and field experience with Australian ecosystems, with a preference for Northern and Arid Australia, and a broad range of taxa and habitats.
2. Experience with natural resource management activities such as weed management, mapping, feral animal management, revegetation, fencing or fire management.
3. Experience maintaining cross-cultural relationships with Indigenous communities on environmental projects. Where there is no experience with Indigenous communities, similar experiences with diverse cultures.
4. Experience organising and/or carrying out remote and physically demanding fieldwork. Manual drivers license required.
5. Strong oral and written communication skills for diverse audiences including Indigenous communities, government, scientists, land managers, media and the general community.
6. A reliable, motivated, passionate and constructive person, who can work well as a member of a team and independently, showing initiative and innovative approaches to problem solving.
7. A shared understanding of and commitment to Environs Kimberley’s vision, values and goals.

Desirable Criteria

8. Demonstrated experience with project management, including project development, budget management, deliverables and reporting.
9. Experience managing and training staff, contractors, consultants and/or volunteers.
10. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, data management, data analysis, GIS and spatial analysis, and/or computer modelling.
