Land Eco is looking for Field Ecologists to join our Project Ecology team

You will be working on top tier infrastructure and renewables, and energy projects

Your day-to-day role will involve:

  • habitat surveys - traversing areas of bushland for habitat features, that may support protected native fauna. This includes (but not limited to) hollow-bearing trees, nests, caves/crevices, termite mounds, large hollow logs and other important habitat features.
  • flora surveys - surveying large, remote properties for threatened flora, this involves walking 5-20km per day searching habitat for rare orchids, herbs, shrubs, trees
  • fauna surveys - using industry reccommended survey techniques such as camera traps, pitfall traps, songmeters, tile surveys, observational surveys etc.

Other work that may arise:

  • As this work is associated with large-scale renewables development projects, part of your role may involve being present on site during government-approved vegetation clearing works, to capture and relocate displaced fauna, and advise on salvaging habitat items from areas that will be cleared of vegetation to enable construction.
  • You will witness vegetation/land clearing, however, your role will help ensure this clearing is undertaken in the most environmentally-sensitive manner as possible, in accordance with approved project management plans

You will be trained in survey, and animal handling techniques from more experienced staff, however, experience and competence in animal handling is ideal

You may also be involved in surveying-for and mapping (using GPS) weeds and threatened flora

You will build experience on incredible nation-building projects in beautiful and remote parts of Australia, mostly regional New South Wales

Admin

  • You will mobilise and demobilise for field trips from our office in Warriewood on the northern beaches of Sydney, you will ideally live within 1.5 hours travel from our office
  • You will be paid above your equivalent level according to the Professional Employees Award
  • Employment is Casual (hourly rate). It will be 80% - 98% field based with some office work (e.g. data entry, field write-up)
  • We will supply laptop computer, safety and field equipment for you to carry-out your role
  • You will be expected to spend long periods of time away from home and family/friends. If you love your routine, or have a lot of family/social commitments, this role is definitely not for you!
  • The role will FIFO or DIDO and involve driving a company car, or catching a flight and driving a hire car
  • working in regaional areas across NSW Sydney for 8 to 16 days in a row
  • All food and accomodation covered by your employer. We will put you up in comfortable accommodation (motel or airbnb) and pay for all of your meals and other relevant out of pocket expenses related to the project
  • You may be required to work weekends, however you will be paid for all time worked, and we will schedule your time so you take time off to recharge after your stint
  • Your day-to-day role will involve walking through bushland terrain, sometimes rugged hillslopes, so high degree of health and fitness is essential. If you have any injuries that could be exacerbated by hiking in hilly terrain, this role is not for you

Essential Criteria

All candidates must:

  • Hold an Australian drivers license (green P or full license only) with clean driving record.
  • Hold a relevant Tertiary Degree in Science, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Natural Resources, Ecology, Animal Studies, Zoology, Biology, Marine Biology, Conservation or similar.
  • Must have some demonstrable experience in flora identification or evidence that you are able to learn.
  • Be medically and physically fit /able to walk up to 20km in a day across bushland areas, including some steep country, in hot, dry, humid, cold, or wet conditions looking for habitat and threatened species.
  • Be able to attend work in remote locations at short notice (48 hours).
  • Be able to spend up to 16 days away from home at a time on an all-expenses paid field trip.
  • Desire to experience new things, travel, and make money.
  • Be able to commence working for Land Eco quickly (i.e. within 1 to 4 weeks of undertaking an interview for the role) - the quicker the better!

Favourable

  • Ability to drive manual.
  • Ability to drive a four wheel drive.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word Proficiently.
  • Experience with GIS or other mapping software.
  • Ability to use a handheld GPS (e.g. Garmin GPS Map).
  • Industry Safety Whitecard.
  • Experience in fauna handling (or proven effort/desire to build experience in this field).
