Southern Ecosystems Management is a small and passionate, well-established Environmental management company based in Taradale, Central Victoria with a second team working in the West of Melbourne. We have a number of contracts with Local Government within the region, works on private land as well as ongoing works with other government authorities.

The opportunity:

Southern Ecosystems Management have a new position for our Melbourne Metro, north West and rural north west Melbourne projects. We are looking for a worker with some prior experience and ecological knowledge of native grassland management and restoration in particular, reasonable plant identification skills, and a willingness to learn more. Must be interested in leading small teams. Experienced staff will be available to supervise and train as needed.

Desirable qualifications include Cert 3, 4 or diploma in conservation and land management, or a bachelor's degree in relevant field. On-the-job experience to equivalent level is also acceptable. The following certificates are desirable but not essential:

  • Chemcert or ACUP
  • First Aid certificate
  • Chainsaw level 1 (or higher)

The position is offered as a 36-hour week (9 day fortnight) full-time permanent, with a 3 month probationary period. Part time is not preferable for this position, but we may consider it for the right candidate. Wage starts at $58k ($31/hour) with normal permanent entitlements.

Key Selection Criteria

Knowledge                 

  • Good understanding of grassland/bushland management
  • Prior experience and ecological knowledge of native grassland management and restoration
  • Good knowledge of indigenous plants, weed species and ability to identify a wide range of plants
  • Good knowledge of weed control techniques, familiarity with a range of herbicides, tools and equipment
  • Understanding of the ecology of a wide range of ecosystems and the ecological requirements of different plants
  • An understanding of the relevant Occupational Health and Safety Legislation and Guidelines

Skills - Management

  • Excellent organisational skills including ability to plan works, prioritise tasks and manage time efficiently
  • Ability to assist in coordinating the activities of the bushland crew and to lead when the crew leader is working on other sites
  • Ability to liaise with customers, team members and employees
  • Good computer skills and the ability to keep detailed records and maintain databases
  • Ability to receive and carry out instructions as directed by Company Management and customer representatives

Interpersonal

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to enthusiastically motivate staff to complete tasks to meet customer standards within agreed time frames
  • Ability to assist the Team Leader
  • Ability to supervise, train and provide clear directions for staff
  • Ability to communicate plans, prioritise and work schedules to crew members

A manual driver’s licence & own transport are essential
