About the Myuma Group

The Myuma Group is a group of non-profit corporations owned by the Indjalandji-Dhidhanu People - the Traditional Aboriginal landowners of the upper Georgina River region in far northwest Queensland. Dugalunji Aboriginal Corporation, as part of the Myuma Group, is recruiting an Indigenous Ranger to join its Indigenous Land and Sea Ranger Program.

Key Responsibilities and Selection Criteria:

  • Be comfortable in the management of pest plants and animals, native flora and fauna, water, habitats and cultural sites, often in remote locations.
  • Work with the team to understand and provide culturally relevant information to raise awareness and integrate traditional knowledge and practices for improved natural resource management outcomes.
  • Hold good interpersonal communication skills and the ability to respectfully engage with colleagues, traditional owners, land managers, government agencies, local government, students and community.
  • Be committed to a continual journey of personal and professional development, for example be commitment to the role, be punctual and reliable, follow work plans, workplace policies and procedures, participate in 6-monthly performance development and planning processes, work planning activities and exercise discretion and show initiative within the scope of your assigned duties.
  • Be respectful and comfortable working under direction of a Senior Ranger to willingly participate in all Ranger duties, activities and training opportunities, for example courses; training; natural resource management tasks; biodiversity mapping; weed management, flora and fauna identification.
  • Be comfortable learning how to capture and enter electronic data on Global Positioning Systems (GPS), field tablets, cameras, cultural management databases and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • Spend time to learn and implement administrative duties, follow protocols and procedures, for example professional email etiquette; administrative templates; information management systems; filing protocols; timesheets; sick leave; workplace health and safety processes and uphold the Myuma Group's core values at all times.
  • Use initiative to develop ways to provide reports on work activities that help to achieve the delivery of organisational goals and objectives, for example contractual arrangements with funding partners, company values and following safe work practices.
  • Learn to present information at public functions to a wider ranging audience, including Traditional Owner boards, conferences, seminars and workshops.
  • Take care of work equipment, fleet, plant and camping gear, including cleaning and maintenance.
  • Exercise discretion and show initiative within the scope of your assigned duties and behave in an honest, fair and professional manner.
  • Work actively to promote a positive and supportive team culture, one that works towards team members strengths, encourages resourcefulness, innovation and contributes towards continuous improvement of all people, processes and systems.
  • Build good relationships to support communication between the different organisations and disciplines throughout The Myuma Group, for example Management, Human Resources, Finance, Training, Hospitality, Job Active/CDP, Works, Housing and Safety.
  • Undertake all relevant medical examinations and drug/alcohol tests as required by your employer.
  • Be comfortable to perform ad hoc tasks to support the team and the work plan as and when required.

To be eligible for this position, you must:

  • Identify as Indigenous.
  • Certificate II or higher in Conservation and Land Management, Rural Operations or equivalent experience.
  • Strong interest and demonstrated skills or experience in various aspects of natural and cultural resource management (flora and fauna identification, land management and ecology).
  • Understanding of cultural protocols, together with traditional and external clients and work respectfully in accordance with Indigenous and non-Indigenous cultures.
  • Good communication skills and ability to understand and act upon instructions and tasks, work both supervised and unsupervised in line with standard policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work in a co-operative manner with others in a team environment and be part of a team that resolves problems.
  • Ability and willingness to undertake physical labour, outdoors and in adverse weather conditions often in remote locations for extended periods, as well as handle a variety of plant and animal specimens, chemicals, within workplace health and safety guidelines.
  • Ability to incorporate safety management processed into all aspects of work.
  • Reasonable oral and written English communication skills as well as computer skills in Microsoft Office.
  • Current manual C Class Qld Driver's Licence, or be eligible to obtain one (essential).
  • Blue Card (working with children), or be eligible to obtain one (essential).
  • 4WD Licence, or be eligible to obtain one (essential).
  • ACDC Licence, or be eligible to obtain one (essential).
  • Current Construction White Card, or be eligible to obtain one (essential).
  • Use of UHF/VHF radios.
  • Senior First Aid, or be eligible to obtain (essential).
  • Exercise discretion and show initiative.
  • Display a minimal level of knowledge on Aboriginal culture.
