The Opportunity

We have an opportunity for a Planning Project Officer to be part of our Fisheries & Aquaculture Division within the Department of Primary Industries and Regions.

As part of the project team to deliver on Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC) project `Ecologically sustainable aquaculture growth through Integrated Multitrophic Aquaculture (IMTA)  - Incorporating nutrient modelling into regulatory frameworks, Project Number: 2023-051,' the Planning Project Officer is responsible for undertaking a literature review of IMTA including existing models and data requirements, providing input and advice to the project team, and developing a national policy guideline to inform regulatory frameworks that supports the development, implementation, management and uptake of IMTA and ecologically sustainable growth in Australian aquaculture. The role will also identify any gaps in knowledge and potential opportunities for further research.

The Planning Project Officer will also examine how to take the broad national IMTA policy guidelines developed through this project and embed them into the regulatory framework for the South Australian aquaculture industry ensuring consistency with the objectives of the Aquaculture Act 2001 and subordinate legislation, and contribute to other internal and external core policy/planning/legislative projects to stimulate further economic growth of, and investment in, the aquaculture industry including IMTA opportunities.

To be effective in this role the incumbent requires the ability to analyse and interpret research, excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as an understanding of policy processes and an ability to interpret legislative frameworks, processes, and protocols. The incumbent requires a sound understanding of the major issues and trends relevant to the aquaculture industry and their implications for environmental, social, and economic objectives of the Aquaculture Act 2001.

The role reports to the Manager Aquaculture Planning and will liaise and work cooperatively with other project investigators, including South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) Aquatic and Livestock Sciences Division staff, as well as PIRSA Fisheries and Aquaculture staff, the aquaculture industry and national industry representatives (e.g. Seafood Industry Australia (SIA) and the Australian Sustainable Seaweed Alliance (ASSA), Australian Fisheries Manager's Forum - Aquaculture Committee and the Blue Economy CRC), other state and territory government departments responsible for aquaculture, FRDC, and other government agencies as relevant.

The role will represent PIRSA in stakeholder meetings and will be required to organise and deliver workshops and presentations throughout the project. The incumbent needs to work in a highly collaborative and consultative manner and contribute to delivering the agency's priorities including increasing productivity of primary industries, secure production, enable market access, and build partnerships with industry and stakeholders.
