Environmental Assessment

Several Ongoing vacancies are available

  • Contribute to the protection of the Territory’s unique environment.
  • Work with a passionate environmental impact assessment team.
  • Enjoy the diversity of projects and benefit from flexible work arrangements.

Bring your experience in environmental impact assessment and/or best practice environmental management to the team protecting the Territory’s environment.

The Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security (DEPWS) was established with a clear vision that the Northern Territory’s natural assets are managed sustainably for the benefit of all. Its purpose is to provide evidence-based advice and regulation to support sustainable use of the Northern Territory’s natural resources, and protect and preserve its wildlife, parks and reserves.

The Environmental Assessment Unit (EAU) in DEPWS conducts environmental impact assessment functions of the Northern Territory Environment Protection Authority (NT EPA) under the Environment Protection Act 2019 (EP Act). The NT EPA is an independent authority of seven members; its key objectives include promoting ecologically sustainable development and protecting the environment.

As a Senior Assessment Officer you play a key leadership role in effectively implementing environmental impact assessments of development proposals in accordance with the EP Act and Environment Protection Regulations 2020.

Your key duties involve the identification, critical analysis and risk assessments of environmental impacts associated with development proposals; and recommending environmental assessment and protection standards and safeguards, consistent with best practice environmental management. This will involve liaising with NT government agencies, development proponents, and other stakeholders. You will also provide high quality, efficient and timely environmental and scientific advice to the NT EPA and other stakeholders on development matters that come under the responsibility of the EAU.

To be successful, you require tertiary qualifications in environmental science or a related field and demonstrated experience in environmental impact assessment, natural resource management or environmental management. It is key that you can interpret scientific information and that you have highly developed written communication skills to convey complex information to a broad audience. You also require an ability to manage multiple projects, negotiate, problem-solve, and work independently. Technical experience in the assessment of impacts on the biophysical, social and or cultural aspects of the environment, will be well received.

You will be rewarded with a competitive salary package including 11% superannuation, 6 weeks recreational and 3 weeks personal leave annually, 17.5% leave loading, negotiable flexible work arrangements, potential for assistance with relocation costs, and an opportunity to experience the uniqueness of living in the Northern Territory.

This is a great time to consider a move to the Territory. Enjoy an enviable laidback lifestyle with short commutes, tropical sunsets, spectacular lightning displays and unique landscapes with cool waterholes. Darwin’s rich cultural society and community spirit makes it an easy place to meet people and make new friends.
