The organisation

The Oyster Harbour Catchment Group Inc. was established in 1992 and is a well-recognised and awarded not-for-profit community organisation based in Mt Barker, WA. The group facilitates, co-ordinates and implements natural resource management through engagement with stakeholders in the Oyster Harbour catchment and surrounding areas.

The catchment covers more than 3000km2 extending from Albany to Tenterden with significant agricultural production and is an internationally recognised biodiversity hotspot with important nature reserves including Porongurup and Stirling Range national parks. Our work focuses on waterways and vegetation protection, promoting agricultural best practices and invasive species control which has contributed to a remarkable water quality improvement and seagrass recovery in Oyster Harbour Miaritch.

The role

The purpose of the role is to deliver cat management education activities as part of two OHCG projects: Perils of Ferals (State NRM) and the cat management components of Conservation of Urban Western Ringtail Possum Populations (Saving Native Species). The activities will raise awareness of the impacts of roaming cats and contribute to protecting threatened native species.

The successful applicant will be part of a small team operating with strategic guidance from an elected committee. Building and maintaining relationships with partner groups is important for implementation of the project activities.

The role will work closely with the Cat Laws and Wildlife Survival (CLAWS) working group and their project officer who have made a significant contribution to developing the projects relevant to this role.

Key duties

  • Work with project team to deliver activities within timelines, budget and monitoring requirements.
  • Develop and implement a communication plan for the relevant projects.
  • Present to school groups utilising ‘CLAWS’ education packages.
  • Coordinate community and stakeholder events to encourage cat management.
  • Develop display and promotional resources from artwork provided.
  • Liaise and consult with steering group and project partners as required.
  • Prepare project reports for internal and external needs as required.
  • Perform other duties as required. 

Requirements for the role

  • Experience in project management with competing priorities in natural resource management or similar.
  • Strong community engagement experience with varied target audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, self-motivated and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to apply for and maintain a Working with Children check.
  • Current C-class WA Driver’s licence.
