About the role

WolfPeak are seeking an enthusiastic and resourceful Ecologist to join our small, but growing team of experienced ecologists working across NSW and interstate.

You will be working on a range of projects at different scales and complexity. Your work will focus on flora assessments required for BAM and other programs. There is also a growing opportunity to complete flora, fauna and other ecology assessments for large scale renewable energy projects.

If you have a passion for ornithology and have done avifauna assessments at regional scale this would be highly regarded as part of your role. You will have the opportunity to learn off, and be supported by, other experienced professionals working in the ecology space.

This role could be for you

WolfPeak is looking for an Ecologist to join the team across the Sydney and Port Macquarie offices of WolfPeak. The role sits within the Biodiversity team. You will report to the Ecology Principal and Practice Lead. You will be working alongside other ecologists at different levels with the company. The role will involve regional and possibly interstate travel and will involve (on occasion) multi-day fieldwork.

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking a candidate with a degree in a relevant science discipline (ecology, environmental science, natural resource management). Pos-graduate studies would be highly regarded.

You will ideally have 1-3 years in a consultancy -based environment completing a range of flora, fauna and impact assessments. You will be a dedicated self-starter who is knowledgeable but is also willing to learn and grow your career.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Be responsible for carrying out technical assessments for flora and fauna on projects at a range of scales as part of the BAM method and other WolfPeak developed methods.
  • Prepare technical reports to a high standard in line with current legislation and internal guidelines.
  • Provide team lead direction for fieldwork as required by individual projects
  • Establish / maintain positive working relationships with current and future clients and industry peers.
  • Foster a positive culture and work environment, that reflects WolfPeak’s values and strives for equality.
  • Ensuring that a safe and harmonious workplace is always maintained.

Key Skills and Attributes:

  • A relevant tertiary degree in Ecology, Zoology, Botany, or equivalent
  • Minimum 1-3 years practical experience in conducting flora and fauna assessments.
  • Working knowledge and experience in the application of relevant NSW and Commonwealth environmental legislation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Foundational project management skills.
  • A desire to engage with stakeholders including developers, state government, council and members of the public.
  • A current New South Wales Driver’s License.
  • Ability to work independently and be resourceful.
  • High level computing skills, particularly in Microsoft Office suites and GIS.
  • Demonstrated problem solving capability.
  • Experience working in coastal and inland regional areas would be an advantage.
  • Experience in vegetation community recognition and mapping in accordance with BAM methods would be highly regarded.
  • Current BAM accreditation would be highly regarded, or willingness and capability to become accredited in the short-medium term.
  • Statistical packages such as R-script would be an advance.
  • 4WD training and experience would be an advance, or willingness to complete training.
