About Conservation Partners

We work with people or organisations who own or control land with significant biodiversity values, helping them assemble the necessary skills and expertise to address conservation problems on the ground. We are currently undertaking conservation projects involving multiple threatened species on several properties in western Queensland and Cape York Peninsula. Where necessary, we undertake applied research to inform conservation management. We also invest heavily in quantitative monitoring which is integrated into our conservation and land management actions.

About the Role

We are seeking a passionate and highly motivated individual with skills and prior experience in conservation and land management. The role will focus primarily on conservation management of the Golden-shouldered Parrot. The candidate will work mostly at Artemis Station on central Cape York Peninsula – a working cattle station. Basic share accommodation is provided while you are working on site. Working rosters are semi-flexible and typically follow a 10 day fortnight with the option to travel (Cairns or Atherton Tablelands) on time off. Travel allowances are provided to cover the use of personal vehicles. A daily food allowance is provided to subsidise the cost of living away from home. This is a four month position (September to December), with the possibility of extension.

This is unique opportunity to be involved with the conservation of a charismatic and highly threatened species. It is a physically demanding role in a challenging and remote location, but provides a rewarding and enjoyable lifestyle to the right candidate.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Participate in native grassland and woodland rehabilitation using methods such as
    • clearing vegetation manually with chainsaws and clearing saws
    • strategic herbicide application
    • fire management
    • native grass re-seeding
    • Maintain stock-free fenced areas with both barbed and electric fencing
  • Participate in feral animal management (mostly pigs) including trapping, baiting and monitoring
  • Assist with data capture and management on a daily basis
  • Participate in research and monitoring of endangered species including; camera trapping, mist-netting and acoustic monitoring
  • Potential for analytical, writing and GIS tasks for suitable candidate

Selection criteria

In your application, please address the following:

  • Your genuine interest and desire to conserve native wildlife
  • Your pragmatic approach when working in a mixed land-use setting
  • Demonstrated field experience in land management/conservation ecology or similar
  • Your physical fitness and ability to work in challenging outdoor environments particularly hot- humid conditions
  • Your willingness to work in remote locations for extended periods (minimum of 10 consecutive days)
  • Your experience with a variety of hand tools and small machinery
  • Your ability to work in a small team environment, follow directions and abide by Workplace Health and Safety Policies and Procedures
  • Your attention to detail and the ability to perform tasks to a high standard when unsupervised
