Position: Ecological Monitoring Coordinator
Location: Ramingining and remote homelands
Organisation: ASRAC (Arafura Swamp Rangers Aboriginal Corporation)

Located in north-east Arnhem Land, the greater Arafura Swamp comprises a vast wetland surrounded by an 11,000 km2 catchment extending from Castlereagh Bay to the upper reaches of the Goyder and Glyde Rivers. Traditional country of Yolngu and Bi people, the area shares an unbroken history of Aboriginal ownership and management. With many landowners still residing in their homelands, the region is a stronghold for Indigenous culture. Long considered an area of exceptional conservation value, the catchment is listed on the Register of the National Estate, the central swamp being a Wetland of National Importance and a Site of Conservation Significance as well as being a Key Biodiversity Area. The area is in process of being declared as an Indigenous Protected Area (IPA).

About the Role:

As an Ecological Monitoring Coordinator, you'll play a crucial role in managing and preserving our stunning natural environments. You'll support our ranger teams in delivering effective land and sea management by coordinating environmental monitoring programs. This role combines hands-on fieldwork with office-based program development and offers a chance to lead and inspire a team passionate about ecological preservation.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop and Implement: Coordinate the ASRAC’s monitoring and evaluation program, ensuring alignment with our Plan of Management.
• Lead and Support: Provide day-to-day coordination, supervision, and support for rangers, and deliver on-the-job training.
• Engage and Empower: Visit remote bases and homelands to engage with rangers and identify their training needs.
• Represent and Report: Attend conferences and meetings, produce reports for grant funding, and support rangers in their public engagements.

About You:

• Essentials: Experience in ecological monitoring or environmental management, excellent communication skills, and a love for traditional and contemporary land management practices.
• Desirable: Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field, experience working with Indigenous communities and experience in designing biodiversity monitoring plans.
