The Department of Environment Parks and Water Security's Rangelands Division incorporates the Remote Sensing Unit which is responsible for the management and use of remotely sensed data for a range of scientific monitoring programs. This includes critical components of the Territory Vegetation Extent Analysis program, Integrated Rangeland Monitoring program and the Darwin Harbour Mangrove Monitoring program.

As Remote Sensing Coordinator - TVEA you provide leadership to a small team of remote sensing professionals delivering satellite and raster-based monitoring and change detection data products and reporting. This includes the processing of Landsat and Sentinel imagery and use of High Performance Computing resources to enable existing processing methodologies for assessing land clearing across the Territory. In this role you will also have the opportunity to enhance and streamline program deliverables through assessment of new tools, methods and technologies.

Your key duties will include implementing methodologies to achieve an operational land clearing detection and monitoring system. You will undertake analysis of remotely sensed data to assess spatial and temporal changes in vegetation within the Northern Territory, and ensure that processing pipelines and scientific reporting are delivered to a high quality and within agreed time frames. You will lead the development of data products and advice to stakeholders for the program. You may also undertake field work in remote locations to assess and calibrate models and resulting data outputs.

This is a key role in the Territory's land conservation and natural resource management, and ensuring compliance with the Pastoral Land Act 1992 and the Planning Act 1999. Your tertiary qualifications in natural resource management, remote sensing or a related field, and your knowledge of open source Python and Geographic Information System (GIS) software will be put to good use. As will your ability to assess and monitor natural resources using remote and ground based methods, and develop strong networks with key stakeholders, Traditional Owners and people from diverse backgrounds.
