The Marine Science Program aims to ensure the department's marine biodiversity conservation and management programs are based on best practice science. The program promotes and undertakes marine research and monitoring to improve the scientific basis for the conservation and management of Western Australia's state-wide system of marine protected areas, threatened marine fauna and marine biodiversity generally. Marine research and monitoring are based around the strategies identified in protected area management plans and threatened species recovery/management plans.

Under the immediate direction of senior staff, the role of Technical Officer provides technical and field support for marine monitoring, research, and science communication for the conservation of Western Australia’s marine biodiversity.

Selection Criteria

  1. Demonstrated experience conducting marine science fieldwork and providing technical support to marine monitoring and/or research as a part of a team (ESSENTIAL).
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of marine ecosystems and skills in the identification of marine biota (ESSENTIAL), particularly benthic and fish communities present in Western Australian waters (DESIRABLE).
  3. Demonstrated skills using image/video processing software to provide marine monitoring and/or research data (e.g. EventMeasure, ReefCloud, CPCe, or similar) (ESSENTIAL) and conducting simple statistical analyses and reporting (DESIRABLE).
  4. Demonstrated knowledge and skills developing, managing and cleaning biological datasets (ESSENTIAL).
