About the Role: 

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) is providing funding for this position to support the development of a Kimberley Indigenous Fishing Initiative to inform the next decade of engagement on fisheries research, Traditional Owner (TO) led fisheries and TO customary harvest protocols.

The ISWAG Fishing Coordinator will support Kimberley TOs to protect and conserve their marine and aquatic resources.  The role will progress the Indigenous fishing agenda in the Kimberley by improving regional compliance with local customary harvest protocols through community engagement, education and liaison with TOs.

The position operates out of the Broome KLC office with regular travel to the Dampier Peninsula, Derby, Wyndham and other remote Kimberley locations. The successful applicant will be required to work irregular hours and at a range of locations throughout the Kimberley.

Time away from home may also be required. On some occasions this may involve living on vessels or camping on islands for short periods. Given the conditions outlined, the applicant needs to ensure they understand and accept these requirements and have discussed them with their families

Key Responsibilities:

Primary:

• Develop a regional policy and protocol for customary fishing in the Kimberley in strong collaboration with Kimberley Traditional Owner PBCs
• Support the DPIRD Fisheries Research Policy and Prioritisation process to include Kimberley Traditional Owner priorities
• Facilitate ISWAG member understanding of economic development opportunities in Kimberley fisheries, including the Cooperative Research Centre for Developing Northern Australia (CRCDNA) workshops and the Mud Crab project
• Support the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) and DPIRD to clarify their roles and interface in the implementation of jointly managed marine parks
• Contribute meaningfully to Fisheries Resources Management Act (FRMA) consultation processes
• Facilitate Fisheries compliance capacity building opportunities and employment pathways for Kimberley Indigenous saltwater managers
• Coordinate regular discussions between ISWAG members on saltwater topics using technology and on-country meetings
• Work closely with the ISWAG Coordinator and Co-Chairs to ensure all projects are aligned to the ISWAG Strategic Plan, and ensure coordinated, efficient engagement between Government Agencies, ISWAG and its Traditional Owner members

Financial

• Manage and produce reports on allocated funds
• Develop financial models for business plans and funding application
• Maintain a clean and safe workspace actively contribute to the health and safety of the workplace by adhering to all health and safety policies and procedures.

Occupational Health and Safety

• Reduce workplace hazards and implement safety and health programs for both KLC and employees
• Ensure daily compliance with funding contracts and service delivery
• Comply with all internal KLC policies and procedures and ensure the team’s adherence

Other

• Support the integration of Indigenous knowledge and management practices into Kimberley saltwater research opportunities and projects
• Participate in ISWAG Forums to share science and knowledge opportunities between members, and to build sector partnerships
• Demonstrate an awareness of and commitment to the KLC Vision and its Values.
• Coordinate and carry out all the tasks of the position including administration, management and liaising with external and internal stakeholders, as required. 
• Other tasks as directed by authorised KLC and ISWAG representative 

Selection Criteria:

Essential

1. Previous experience in policy/ economic development and or Indigenous engagement
2. 5 years’ experience in a similar role or industry
3. Diploma or above in a subject field related to the position
4. Excellent verbal and written communication
5. Well organised and able to meet deadlines
6. Ability to manage complex budgets
7. Valid Driver’s Licence
8. Current Working with Childrens Check (WWC)

Desirable

1. First Aid Certificate
2. Valid Boating Licence and other relevant maritime qualifications
3. Healthy Country Planning Open Standards Training and or experience
