Swainsona Seed Services (SSS) is a small environmental business that specialises in bulk native seed supply, native seed quality testing, seed biology research and vegetation surveys, with clients mainly in the mining and resource sectors in SA, NSW and VIC.

About the role/s:

We are seeking people to join our small team, primarily to assist with laboratory testing of native seeds, including seed counts, purity, viability and germination tests as well as data entry and report preparation. This work mostly includes counting and dissecting seeds using microscopes, scalpels and forceps, requiring the ability to work efficiently and maintain concentration for long periods of time.

At the present time the main role/s on offer are on a casual basis with fulltime hours, though a minimum availability of 3 days a week will also be accepted. Although roles are available for experienced laboratory technicians, recent graduates looking to gain experience in the industry are encouraged to apply.

If you are physically fit and capable of working away there may also be opportunities to also assist in some field work in Spring and Summer, including bulk native seed collection and vegetation monitoring. Also, if you are an experienced seed collector but are not interested in laboratory work, please contact us as seed collection opportunities may exist in Spring/Summer, including both casual or contract work, depending on your experience and availability.

The skills and experiences we require are:

  • Work efficiently without compromising quality
  • Ability to maintain concentration for extended periods of time
  • Be computer literate
  • Adhere to quality and safety requirements
  • Have situational awareness and the ability to analyse and pre-empt problems
  • Have a C class drivers license
  • Be reliable, self-motivated, positive, with a can-do attitude
  • Be enthusiastic and able and to work within a small team, and individually

It would also be great if you have any of the following:

  • Tertiary or TAFE qualification in Environment/Conservation and Land Management, or have similar relevant industry experience
  • Experienced in laboratory work, especially dissecting material under microscopes
  • Be fit and healthy, with the ability to pass a pre-employment medical, including drug screen (required if assisting in field work)
  • Experience collecting and cleaning bulk native seed
  • Basic knowledge of arid and semi-arid native species
  • First aid and white card accreditation
  • Four-wheel drive experience
