Location:

Bass Coast, Victoria

Looking for a change? Come join our team. Let's look at what your week might look like ...

  • On Monday you could be working with a government agency helping manage biodiversity.
  • Tuesday you'll wake up and work on utility networks.
  • Wednesday you might be visiting a new place and assisting with ecological field work.
  • Thursday you might liaise with archaeologists in recording the location of artefacts.
  • And Friday might see you mapping accessibility in cities.

These are not hypotheticals. This is our work!

If this sounds good, consider applying for a GIS Technician or GIS Analyst role at TerraLab!

TerraLab provides GIS and ecological consulting services to its clients, as well as supplying the STA logger worldwide. A rare opportunity is available for a GIS technician or analyst to join the team (the position the candidate fulfils will be based on their skills and experience).

The successful candidate will enjoy flexibility in how they are engaged (full time, part time, casual), with the perks of a work from home lifestyle, and will work closely with a small team of experts. The position has room to grow.

A GIS Technician supports clients by helping them solve spatial data problems. This includes managing spatial data, deploying mobile mapping applications, building web mapping applications, and producing high-quality cartography. A GIS Technician may also be involved in the maintenance and support of STA logger systems. Field surveys are also part of the role, which includes mobile mapping projects, high-accuracy GNSS surveys, site inspections, plot marking and assisting in ecological assessments. When required, field work is sometimes in remote locations, requiring long travel times. Stays away from home are occasionally required.

During desktop duties, a GIS Technician works from home so must have an adequate workspace and internet connection. The desktop to field work ratio is estimated to be 90:10 though varies based on the schedule or work.

A GIS Analyst has similar requirements to a GIS Technician, though takes the lead in designing solutions and directing Technicians to complete the work. This may require supervising and leading field teams, building sophisticated geoprocessing workflows, automating solutions, and coordinating staff.

Our ideal candidate for the Technician role would be someone with a years experience in GIS, using editing and processing workflows and well developed cartography skills. Our ideal candidate for the Analyst role will have advanced GIS related Python skills, and advanced experience in the duties of a Technician.

Although desktop work can be completed remotely, it is preferred that applicants are located within a comfortable driving distance of Phillip Island, Victoria so that they can be involved in occasional in person meetings, and for field work car pooling. Employment is conditional upon having the right to work in Australia. Evidence of valid working rights will be required.

Those with additional skills in one of the following additional fields will be favoured: terrestrial ecology, cultural heritage management, utility networks, surveying.
