Status: Part-Time (4 days per week) - Fixed-term position to October 2025 with potential for extension, subject to funding.

Remuneration: up to $55,000/year pro rata depending on experience, plus Super (out of pocket expenses covered where travel etc is necessary).

OzFish Unlimited is an exciting NGO dedicated to helping the millions of Aussie recreational fishers take action for the health of their waterways and shore up the future of the sport they love. OzFish Unlimited partners with fishers and the broader community to invest resources into the protection and restoration of our waterways, counteracting decades of degradation.

OzFish is seeking an energetic Project Officer for our team based in Mackay, North Queensland. Working with the OzFish HQ team, you will be responsible for:

  • Implementing fish habitat restoration programs around Mackay/Whitsunday area.
  • Engaging with key stakeholders, including community groups, local council, industry partners, university researchers and traditional owner groups.
  • Providing desktop and on-ground support to fish habitat restoration programs in north and central QLD, including organising and attending events, analysing data and preparation of technical reports.
  • Engaging fishers and the broader community in waterway restoration and monitoring activities in north QLD.
  • Communication and promotion of OzFish activities (including regular social media interactions).
  • Supporting the local OzFish Mackay Chapter through assisting with organisation of events and chapter meet ups.
  • Weekly local travel within the greater Mackay/Whitsunday area will be required for this role.
  • Occasional travel from Mackay to surrounding regions, including Whitsunday, Bowen, Rockhampton and Gladstone from time to time.

We are looking for someone enthusiastic about fish habitat and fishing who wants to make a difference to aquatic environments.

Key skills:

  1. Qualification in Environmental Science, Aquatic Biology or similar.
  2. Demonstrated understanding of aquatic environments and their threats, especially in tropical north Queensland.
  3. Willingness to engage the community and manage volunteers (past experience beneficial).
  4. Experience in community communication and promotion, especially through social media.
  5. Willingness to travel, current drivers licence and suitable vehicle for local travel.
  6. Strong technical writing skills.

It would be a bonus if you had:

  • Demonstrated experience in delivery of environmental restoration projects.
  • Experience in collaborating with government and non-government organisations to achieve joint outcomes.
  • Project coordination experience.
  • Strong connections to the local recreational fishing community.
  • Experience delivering projects in collaboration with Traditional Owner groups.
