About ReconEco

ReconEco is a medium sized, well-established environmental consultancy based in Lismore on the NSW North Coast. The company is loosely divided into two business strains namely the 'ecology' section and the 'feral animal management and control' section. The feral animal management section works throughout Northern NSW undertaking feral animal monitoring and control programs (and subsequent reporting of methods and results) typically in association with threatened species protection. ReconEco's client base for feral animal management includes local councils, various state government departments, not for profit organisations, developers fulfilling offset obligations and private individuals.

The Role

ReconEco is seeking to appoint a Feral Animal Management - Field Officer to a part time or casual position working on average 3 days a week (with the possibility for more). The successful candidate will need to be flexible around work hours/days and how the workload is spread. There will be 'after hours' work (including early morning and night-time) and occasional weekend work with some weeks requiring longer hours than others.

The primary role of the position will be to help undertake feral animal monitoring and control programs targeting a variety of species including feral pigs, feral cats, foxes, wild dogs, cane toads and rabbits. It is essential for the successful candidate to be enthusiastic, self-motivated and able to work independently and as part of a team. The candidate needs to be approachable and have strong communication skills as the position involves close liaison/collaboration with a variety of stakeholders including private property owners.

Main duties of the position include:

  • Undertake feral animal monitoring programs mainly utilising IR cameras.
  • Undertake feral animal control programs including:
    • Leg-hold trapping targeting cats, foxes and wild dogs.
    • Trapping of feral pigs including free feeding and the use of panel traps.
    • Feral pig control using Hoggone nirite bait and hoggone feeders.
    • Cage trapping targeting mainly feral cats.
    • Ground shooting including night-time shoots; and.
    • 1080 baiting.
  • Use electronic data collection devices to help plan, implement and report on field survey programs.
  • Help plan feral animal control programs including drafting quotes and budgets, and using GIS to map sites and plan programs.
  • Report on program methods and results; and.
  • Other duties as required including the supervision of assistant feral animal control staff and assisting the ecology team on occasion.

Selection Criteria:

To be a successful applicant you will need the following qualifications/attributes:

Essential:

  • Experience in planning and implementing feral animal monitoring and control programs including budgeting and the use of the variety of trapping methods mentioned previously.
  • AHCPMG304 - Use of Firearms to humanely destroy animals.
  • AHCPMG307 - Apply animal trapping techniques.
  • AHCCHM304 - Transport handle and store chemical.
  • AHCCHM307 - Prepare & apply chemicals to control pest, weeds, & diseases.
  • Firearms licence accredited 'vertebrate pest contract shoot' and/or 'business or employment - other'.
  • Strong digital data collection skills.
  • Approachable and good communicator with a 'team' attitude.
  • Knowledge of the legislation governing the use of 1080 baiting on private and public lands.
  • Knowledge of the legislation pertaining to the professional and legal use, and transportation of firearms.
  • Unrestricted NSW drivers licence.
  • Willingness to travel to perform duties.
  • 4wd experience including quad bikes.

Desirable:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in an environmental or related discipline.
  • Formal training the use of four wheel drive vehicles.
  • Formal training in the use of quad bikes.
  • Experience with GIS.
