The Alluvium Group

The Alluvium Group brings together a set of organisations who share a common purpose: to make a difference to the world we live in.

Our businesses share a collective vision, strategy and a commitment to client service. Our business model is unique and driven by a genuine belief that a focus on technical depth and excellence better serves our clients.

We work together when it adds value, for instance jointly investing in the Group's Research and Insights program to give back to the industry and to ensure that the latest science has a path to implementation.

As a group we are focussed on an enabling culture in order to remove barriers to creativity and encourage people to develop as leaders throughout our industry.

The strength of our group is embedded in the independent business decision making of our company boards and leadership, and the ability of each entity to focus on delivering exceptional work for our clients.

Alluvium Consulting

Alluvium Consulting is the original company in the Group. We were founded in 2006 to provide advice to government and private organisations on issues facing our water resources, rivers and catchments.

Our focus is catchments to coasts. We aim to influence the direction of catchment and water management in Australia through our work with federal, state and regional government and private sector clients in the resources and development sectors.

We have made significant contributions to water resources management at national, Murray-Darling Basin, Great Barrier Reef, state and local level, and our expertise and approach is sought out by clients. We believe strongly in listening to community, industry and stakeholders, and we are committed to respect, acknowledgement and reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We work hard to differentiate our business and believe it is possible for a commercial organisation to measure its success by things other than profit alone. In order to further our impact, we have recently launched our not-for-profit, the Alluvium Foundation, to advance key issues impacting our industry.

We invest heavily in an enabling culture in order to remove barriers to creativity and encourage people to develop as leaders throughout our business. We consistently achieve client and staff satisfaction ratings well above the norm for the professional services industry and measure these as part of our core business.

Our success is measured by:

  • Impact of our work on communities and environment - our people are motivated by achieving outcomes.
  • The value we create - for our staff and shareholders.
  • Our culture - we want to both provide opportunities, enjoyment and support to our people.

We currently work across offices in Sydney, Newcastle, Byron Bay, Brisbane, Townsville, Canberra and Melbourne as well as having smaller presences in Albury, Adelaide, Fiji, New Zealand and India. We share these physical offices with other companies in the Alluvium Group.

The role context

The Alluvium skillset covers strategic planning through to detailed engineering design for a range of water and environmental management challenges. This role is focussed on water policy, strategy, governance, implementation, stakeholder engagement and evaluation in NSW and the Murray-Darling Basin as well as broader national and international contexts. We work in the space of resolving complex water resource management issues. We are at our best when the work involves complexity with stakeholder, interagency and interjurisdictional values and objectives. We bring very solid relationships and understanding of the history, context, views and perceptions related to water management.

Some of the types of projects you might be involved with:

  • Contributing to the development, review and implementation of Water Sharing and Water Resource Plans, water strategies and project and program-level business cases.
  • Supporting NSW and Commonwealth agencies in implementation of Basin Plan activities, including the NSW Reconnecting River Country Program, which is exploring significant policy innovation to support higher managed flows for the environment.
  • Bridging the technical components of ecohydrology and environmental water planning and delivery with strategic landscape watering strategies and policy, including climate adaptation.
  • Supporting First Nations communities to be actively involved in water management, including land and water management partnerships and self-determination.

We are not a hierarchical business so you can expect a high degree of autonomy and opportunity. With a diverse workload, there are always opportunities to try new things. You should be motivated by working in a team environment and be comfortable building relationships with like-minded professionals. You will be involved in managing projects and building relationships with our clients. You will also play a meaningful role in mentoring and developing less experienced team members.

We are looking for someone to join the NSW team to contribute to strategic growth of the business. The role is preferably based in our Sydney office, however we will consider applicants from other Australian locations. We are open to the appointment of multiple roles at different experience levels and locations.

  • Demonstrated ability in communicating information, including high quality writing skills in English.
  • Ability to manage projects and work collaboratively with a range of stakeholders.
  • A willingness and positive contribution to a collaborative and values-driven work culture.

The following experience would be viewed favourably.

  • Post graduate qualifications in a relevant discipline.
  • Extensive industry relationships.
  • Specific knowledge of NSW and Murray-Darling Basin policy and water management contexts.
