Kiwirrkurra Ranger Coordinator - Junior Ranger Program

  • Location: Alice Springs and Kiwirrkurra.
  • Full-time position (12 months) with likelihood of extension.

For 10 years, Desert Support Services Pty Ltd (DSS) has achieved outcomes for the Traditional Owners of the Central Desert region of Western Australia. We help our clients work on their Country to maintain culture and keep Country healthy.

DSS is currently seeking a talented and committed Kiwirrkurra Junior Ranger Coordinator to lead an exciting new project aimed at supporting the development of Kiwirrkurra young people. Working closely with the existing highly successful adult Ranger program, Kiwirrkurra School and Indigenous Mentors, the role will mentor and support secondary school students to engage in culture, country and education, and to facilitate employment opportunities after school.

This role is an exceptional opportunity to work with Traditional Owners, Rangers and young people in a well-supported, high achieving and well-regarded program with established partnerships, funding and projects. This is a chance to create long-lasting social and ecological impact in a unique part of the desert. The work will be wide-ranging and challenging, and will include intergenerational transfer of cultural knowledge, bringing the classroom into the outdoors via a range of on-country Ranger activities such as fire management, threatened species protection etc, facilitating delivery of accredited VET training and more.

The successful person will:

  • Have a sense of adventure, be resilient and adaptable.
  • Be a dynamic team player.
  • Have facilitation and multi-tasking skills.
  • Be confident working with Aboriginal people to achieve shared goals.
  • Have experience working with young people to support their personal growth.
  • Have experience in education, training, or other youth-focused work.
  • Be comfortable conducting field work, driving and camping in remote desert areas.
  • Show initiative and be able to get results with limited supervision.
  • Have excellent practical, problem solving, organisational, and communication skills.

The role requires you to work in Kiwirrkurra community and remotely in the field for extended periods during the field season (roughly March to November).
