About the opportunity

The School of Life and Environmental Sciences is seeking a Senior Technical Field Officer to oversee operations and provide specialist technical advice and support in the field (primarily) and in the lab. The incumbent will undertake experiments and ensure all equipment is in safe, sound and working order. You will also be responsible for ensuring compliance with work, health, and safety requirements.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Provide specialist technical advice and undertake experiments in collaboration with researchers and other technical staff in the laboratory and field.
  • Demonstrate the use of (sometimes complex) scientific equipment and apparatus.
  • Conduct field measurements of soil carbon across farms.
  • Analyse qualitative and quantitative tests by recording and computing relevant data following analytical tests and investigative tasks.
  • Train staff, visitors, and students in the safe operation of (sometimes complex) laboratory and field equipment.
  • Manage technical information requests, including quotations for fees for service and contract research work.
  • Procure and analyse samples according to an agreed protocol and provision of sample specimens to the National Soil Archive.

About you

  • A bachelor's degree in Ecology, Agriculture, Soil Science, Engineering or relevant field.
  • Relevant experience in research methodologies.
  • Expertise in monitoring and implementing safety requirements.
  • High level skills in the preparation and running of experiments.
  • Demonstrated experience using databases and/or statistical analysis programs.
  • Significant experience in a similar role in a laboratory environment.
  • Experience in preparing soil samples and conducting soil chemical analysis will be highly regarded.

Please note: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. Australian Temporary Residents currently employed at the University of Sydney may be considered for a fixed term contract for the length of their visa, depending on the requirements of the hiring area and the reasons for the position.
