Three Senior Scientist (Ecologists) are required to provide advanced technical, scientific and analytical support and guidance for key scientific programs. The roles will be located within the Conservation and Restoration Science Branch within the Science, Economics and Insights Division.


Senior Scientist, Koala Science - Full-time temporary until June 30, 2025

Koala science priorities are to design and drive the strategic delivery of projects for koalas for DPIE, to help meet the goal of doubling the number of koalas in New South Wales by 2050. Key priorities for the Koala Science team include design and implementation of a baseline assessment of patterns of occurrence of Koalas in NSW; implementation and evaluation of the NSW Koala Monitoring Framework; and review and delivery of the Koala Research Plan. This position will provide high level technical, scientific and analytical support to the design and implementation of the Koala baseline assessment and monitoring programs.

Statement of works: Statement of Works - Koala Science.

Key knowledge and experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in the design and implementation of rigorous terrestrial biodiversity surveys and monitoring projects.
  • Demonstrated capabilities in analysis and modelling of complex ecological datasets, including occupancy modelling, species distribution and or population modelling.
  • Proficient in managing complex ecological datasets.

Essential requirements:

  • Relevant Science degree qualification, such as Environmental Science.

Senior Scientist, Restoration Science - Full-time temporary until June 30, 2023

Provide high level technical, scientific and analytical support to the implementation of terrestrial restoration science and research programs and projects covering diverse and strategic environmental initiatives across NSW including restoration science support to the: NSW Biodiversity Offsets Scheme; NPWS River Red Gum Ecological Thinning Trial; NPWS Feral Predator Free Areas Program; Cumberland Plain Conservation Plan Research Implementation Strategy projects.

Key knowledge and experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in the design and implementation of rigorous terrestrial biodiversity surveys and monitoring projects.
  • Proficient in data management, statistical data visualisation, analysis and modelling, preferably using R.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience in terrestrial restoration science and research.
  • Proficient in communicating science and research to a range of audiences.

Essential requirements:

  • Relevant tertiary scientific qualifications.
  • Driver's license and willingness to undertake fieldwork in remote locations for up to three weeks at a time.

Senior Scientist, Threatened Grassy Ecosystems - Full-time temporary until June 30, 2023

This new role will contribute expert ecological knowledge and scientific assessment and refinement of site-based methods used in the assessment, regulation and conservation of grasslands, derived native grasslands and grassy woodlands across NSW, including Critically Endangered Ecological Communities. The role will work closely with DPE Policy and other stakeholders including Local Land Services and will provide expert input to the NSW Native Vegetation Regulatory Map.

Key knowledge and experience:

  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience in grassland and/or grassy woodland ecology.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience in the management of Endangered Ecological Communities.
  • Proficiency and demonstrated experience in stakeholder engagement including excellent communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills.
