Under the direction of the traditional land owners, the corporation undertakes land and sea management activities in and around the Arafura Swamp. Located in north-east Arnhem Land, the greater Arafura Swamp is a vast wetland recognised for its conservation significance surrounded by an 11,000 km2 catchment extending from Castlereagh Bay to the upper reaches of the Goyder and Glyde Rivers. Traditional country of Yolngu and Bi people, the area has an unbroken history of Aboriginal ownership and management. ASRAC rangers consult and work with the area’s traditional owners and people with customary management responsibilities to implement the ASRAC Healthy Country Plan.

About the role

ASRAC is a strong and expanding corporation seeking to recruit a CEO with strategic vision to maintain and build upon its successes. The CEO must have a high level of professional and personal integrity, and have a strong interest in supporting Aboriginal people realise their aspirations for their country and community.

In addition to being responsible for maintaining the natural and cultural assets of the region under the direction of landowners, the CEO will be required to foster partnerships and economic ventures to the increase the corporation’s ability to support its members. Experiencing in managing a remote organisation and being able to effectively operate in a cross-cultural environment is essential for this role.

Although based in Darwin, the CEO will be required to spend a minimum of 7 days each month within the ASRAC management area. The CEO must therefore be reasonably fit, be able to operate a 4WD, prepared to spend time in very remote localities and willing to undertake travel by light aircraft.
