About us

The Victorian Alps Nursery is managed by the Mt Hotham Alpine Resort Management Board (RMB), situated in Ovens at the DELWP site depot. The site is located between the picturesque townships of Bright and Myrtleford in North East Victoria. The RMB is a State Government statutory authority responsible for the operation, promotion, and development of Mt Hotham.

Mt Hotham is Victoria’s premier alpine resort offering a range of year-round tourism experiences and services that attract and sustain a mountain community of residents, staff, and visitors. The Victorian Alps Nursery is a business operation of the RMB and an important sustainability initiative.

The nursery is a specialist Australian alpine plant producer and provides a wide variety of high quality indigenous alpine, subalpine and lowland tubestock to a variety of land managers and Alpine Resorts for rehabilitation purposes. The nursery currently produces between 60,000 to 80,000 tube stock annually, with a small team of three existing staff. The nursery is looking to expand the team due to increasing production targets and clientele.

About the role

The Nursery Supervisor will assist the Nursery Manager to manage propagation of alpine and indigenous flora for sales and distribution to government entities and Landcare groups, to support environmental restoration programs.  The position oversees propagation and tubestock production of high-quality plant stock, therefore sound propagation skills in a broad range of techniques is highly desirable.

The successful candidate will receive extensive site training prior to Acting in the Nursery Manager position to cover an extended leave position. An option for a permanent position at the end of this period is available for the right candidate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Planning, production, and distribution of indigenous plant stock for various provenances
  • Supervision and co-ordination of day to day operations and other staff
  • Procurement of materials and equipment for nursery production
  • Pest and disease identification and management
  • Plant nutrition management and application
  • Maintenance of nursery hygiene and infrastructure including irrigation systems

About you

Employing your prior experience, exceptional horticultural knowledge and effective organisational ability, you will support the manager to maintain and further develop commercial plant sales in an expanding business.

  • Certificate III (or above) in Nursery Horticulture or tertiary qualification in similar field
  • Demonstrated experience in a Nursery Supervisor or Production Management role
  • Drivers licence (medium rigid desirable)
  • A genuine passion for plants and conservation
  • Botanical plant identification skills essential, experience with indigenous species desirable
  • Well developed computer skills proficient in Excel, Outlook and experience in stock inventory database preferred
  • Strong observational skills, high attention to detail and accuracy in work
  • Extensive horticultural knowledge
  • Ability to facilitate viable seed collection and maintain seedbank records
  • Able to work occasional weekends and attend multi-day field trips in various alpine locations
  • Capable to perform heavy lifting tasks and work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Ability to generate and explore a range of possibilities and alternatives in solving problems to contribute to systems, processes and business improvement
  • Able to implement staff training, facilitate productive discussions with staff and ensure staff compliance with policy and procedures
