The Murray-Darling Basin Authority is an independent, expertise based statutory agency responsible for planning the Murray-Darling Basin’s water resources, with all planning decisions made in the interest of the Basin as a whole.

Our most important work is to:

  • Prepare, implement and review an integrated plan for the sustainable use of the Basin's water resources.
  • Operate the River Murray system and efficiently deliver water to users on behalf of partner governments.
  • Measure, monitor and record the quality and quantity of the Basin's water resources.
  • Supporting, encourage and conduct research and investigations about the Basin's water resources and dependent ecosystems.
  • Advise the Australian Government Minister for Water Resources on the accreditation of state water resource plans.
  • Provide water rights information to facilitate water trading across the Basin.
  • Engage and educate the Australian community about the Basin's water resources.

We are currently recruiting for an EL1 Assistant Director, Communications, for a non-ongoing 12 month opportunity.

The Assistant Director works closely with the Communications team and wider program to provide strategic advice, manage channels and develop and deliver communication strategy, products and services.

The Assistant Director must have the ability work across the program to provide connected advice and services for business areas on engagement, media and communications.

The role requires excellent negotiation and stakeholder management skills, and extensive strategic communications experience with a focus on informed audiences. Client service skills are vital to this role, to provide sound advice and support to communicate complex information to various audience groups. An ability to think strategically whilst also playing a hands-on role to deliver communication outputs and outcomes, is a major requirement.

This role has direct supervisory responsibilities for APS level staff members, and holds key relationships with MDBA business areas, which may be located across the MDBA office network.

The key duties for the role include:

  • Provide strategic advice and support for programs and the team on external communication.
  • Provide guidance and direction within the program and agency on communication to build capacity and knowledge of best-practice.
  • Liaise with key communication stakeholders and represent the team and agency.
  • Develop and implement communication strategies for major priorities and projects.
  • Manage the delivery of communications services - product development, digital and print content, design, production.
  • Guide and implement the direction of external communication channels including the MDBA website.
  • Write key messages aligned with communication objectives and tailor to relevant channels and audiences.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of communication and/or engagement strategies, with recommendations for future.
  • Provide direct supervision for APS level communication staff, fulfilling related HR, financial and reporting obligations.
  • Manage and lead team outcomes, monitor progress and follow through to deliver quality outcomes.
  • Participate in the management and planning for a designated capability group including developing, coaching and mentoring and building commitment to shared goals.
  • Develop and maintain an extensive understanding of MDBA’s responsibilities, strategic responsibilities and operational outcomes to ensure team strategies and priorities align.
  • Manage multiple projects with the ability to deliver on projects within timeframes.
