Job Description

AACo is committed to being a leader in sustainable beef production. This means consistently striving for best practice and continuous improvement in the management of the environment and animals under our stewardship, minimising any adverse impact from our operations and contributing positively to the communities where we operate.

Owning roughly 1% of Australia’s landmass and spread over 24 stations across Queensland and the Northern Territory, coordinating this vision is a significant challenge.
As Sustainability Advisor, you will work closely with the Head of Environment and Sustainability to support the development of Sustainability in our business, taking responsibility for key projects and processes while playing a hands-on role working with partners in the development of innovations and adoption of technology. The role requires strong partnership with our Pastoral business and other support operations to deliver meaningful outcomes and to enable AACo’s Sustainability vision.

This role is suited to someone who can demonstrate a passion for Sustainability and the ability to deliver a quality in complex and diverse projects.  You will need a passion for adventure in Australian agriculture and landscapes, an ability to drive initiatives in partnership with personnel across our business, and excellent communication and interpersonal skills for engaging with stakeholders.

Desired Skills and Experience

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contributing as part of a team to the development, implementation and longer term evolution of the AACo Sustainability Vision, Policy and Strategy and our transition to Sustainability as our business model
  • Ownership of AACo’s Sustainability Framework that supports the overarching Strategy, representing the central source of truth for all sustainability-related activity at AACo
  • Taking ownership of key Sustainability initiatives including the Sustainability Report and its associated performance tracking (working closely with a broader team of experts within our business), the Beef Cattle Herd Management Project, emerging annual carbon credit programs and other key Sustainability foundational processes
  • Working with the Head of Environment and Sustainability to engage with stakeholders (customers, governments, representative bodies, NGOs, activists) to understand changing expectations and escalating these internally to drive sustainable and commercial outcomes. 
  • Contributing to identifying and promoting new sustainability initiatives / innovations within the business through industry engagement and research including playing a key role in developing our Carbon initiatives, asset diversification programs and operational practice change programs.
  • Participation in industry forums on Animal Welfare, Environmental Stewardship, and other Sustainability related topics 
  • Manage and monitor progress / achievement of a range of initiatives to ensure delivery of solutions that meet requirements within agreed time and cost
  • Work with the Head of Environment and Sustainability, academics and subject-matter-experts to develop / refine metrics that work for the business 
  • Proactively identify and escalate issues that are a risk to the business or which could impact the successful execution of initiatives
  • Follow up the action items of projects or commitments to ensure timely delivery

The official stuff – Degrees and qualifications:

  • Previous experience in delivering key business programs and complex programs with links to Sustainability
  • Degree qualified in a Commerce, Environmental or Agricultural Sciences, or related field 
  • Highly developed communication skills – both written and verbal
  • You will bring a high degree of numerical and analytical skills,
  • Strong commercial acumen and passion for our industry
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and management and in skills. 
  • You’ll very much be a team player, who enjoys drawing upon and sharing knowledge across the team and broader business with a focus on achieving overall business goals.
  • Able to successfully navigate within varying degrees of ambiguity in a fast-paced environment
